axgutt
My wife and I both have 1995 Legacy L wagons, which have been great. Mine has 344k miles and hers has about 255k miles. We're thinking about selling mine, me taking hers, and getting her something newer. This does break my heart a bit as I was hoping to get mine up to 500k, but she says it looks too ratty (it's been hit by cars, deer, rocks, you name it). Baby #2 is on the way and it given the number of road trips we take we'd like to get something with lower miles. I like the body style of the wagons from 2005 - 2009. I know that nothing's as good as the 2.2, but which engine in the newer range is likely to be the most reliable - 2.5, 2.5 turbo, or H6? Power isn't a huge concern - we're used to 0-60 in 12 seconds or so. Needing premium gas would suck, but if it means potentially getting a few more years out of it, then it might be worth it. ShawnW
I think the regular 2.5 is a great engine and agree that is a very nice looking, driving, and handling Outback/Legacy. Plan on head gaskets and timing belt every 100K going into it and you will not be disappointed. I also love the 2005 GT 5 speed Legacy Turbo edition if you can drive a stick you will LOVE that car. idosubaru
When I was wondering the same thing it seemed like the H6 was highly touted as a great motor. I'm glad I got one. Not a very good chance of having a bad experience with any of them though. I would opt for as new of an EJ25 as you can get.
Durania
I had a 2000 2.5RS coupe that I drove to my last 2 years of college. Was a solid car once the headgaskets were replaced. Would not have hesitated to drive it across the country. It was definitely not a family car and felt cramped with another person in there. Definitely was my last coupe. If I had to get rid of my 95 Outback I would definitely go to the 2000-2005 Legacy style, love a GT wagon. I do have an 05 STi that is about to be my family car with my wife expecting in July.
