Is tehre anyway to run an $WD trans in a FWD car?

Recommended Posts

I am swapping to a manual tranny, and hopefully AWD down the road. I dont want to swap the tranny twice if I can avoid it. Is there anyway at all that you can run the 4wd tranny in 2wd and have no drive shaft?

your gonna need to have the drive shaft it as it tailshaft seals around the spline and keeps the oil in. whats year is the car? if it's an EA-82 just run the front half shaft and bolt the carrer up.

if it's an ea81 ( I think you have an ea81), and you did the ea82 five speed D/R conversion you could still just run the front half of the drive shaft and you would have a much better five speed gear ratio as well. it would be more complicated if you used a 4speed D/R as they have a one piece drive shaft.

yeah it's easy. just run it in FWD or "locked" in 4WD. with only the front axles attached the 4WD is FWD. like they said you just have to have something in the rear of the trans to hold against the seal. install the shaft, hardly any extra work.

The entire console is set up differently on a 2x4. And if you are getting it out of an ea82 style car the whole thing will be different. From my brochures it looks like the ea81 2x4's have a separate console that sticks up a bit just for the Autos. It looks like you could remove that and just get a 2x4 five speed shift boot and it would be ok. Also there is a plate behind the shift console where the 4x4 gear select goes that will have to be replaced with one for a 4x4. That is if you are using a linkage off an ea81. I have no idea if the ea82 shift linkage will fit the same. Also be warned that the 2x4 and 4x4 ea81's had a different gas tank and it will have to be swapped out to fit the rear diff! (And no and ea82 one doesn't fit, I've been down that road myself:rolleyes:)

I hope that info makes sense??

I may just got with an EA81 tranny, im not sure yet. car will probably not be a wheeler, just a street car. Yes, we have a small plastic piece that the gear selector sticks up through, that is seperate from the rest of the console. Does anyone have a picture of what the 4wd 5 speed console looks like?

Here are a couple. My shifting levers are out right now as I'm doing an AWD swap, but I think you can get the idea. I think all you will have to do is get a shift boot (there is an upper one for looks and a lower one to seal up the tunnel), and a 4x4 lever/mount/linkages. The 2x4s also have a place for that second boot

thank you kind sir.

Anytime!

what year of car would this be? that you took the picture of?

This is my 1986 brat gl, but pretty much any 4x4 console in an ea81 will look the same. My 82 wagon has the same exact console, it's just tan.
