Misfire after steam clean - I wonder...

Recommended Posts

Title pretty much says it all. Gave the legacy an engine bay steam clean, making sure I cover the electrics, coil pack, igniter, etc. Blew out the remaining water, made sure the car was running sweet, all good.

Took it for a couple of drives of about 25km, then 10km, then another 10km, sweet as. Went around to my sisters to watch a movie, come out, she fired up fine, drove all good for about a kilometer, then started to act up.

Kinda weird, it's fine idling, fine through first, second, and third, but if I'm coasting in 4th and put the foot down, it misfires, runs on three cylinders. I can hear it, it sounds nasty. No power either.

No check engine light, just that weird symptom. If I throw it into neutral while its missing it'll settle straight back down. Just took it home and parked it, I know there will be water in something electric, and its 10pm here so I'll blow it out again thoroughly tomorrow and it should be fine.

What I wanna know is what particular EFI part would cause that? Seems like a coil pack or maybe water seeping past the HT leads, but I'm not one hundred. Thought if there was water there it'd be missing continuously.

By the way, its a 1989 Legacy, EJ22, 5spd manual, 244,000km. Ran sweet as a nut before this, absolutely no problem whatsoever.

I'll keep ya updated.

Yep happens to me all the time. The spark plug holes fill up with water. Blow it out and it will be back to normal.

You were spot on - water down the spark plug holes. Cleaned em out with a rag and got all the moisture off the leads. Now runs perfect. Cheers :)
