Really weird seeing is how an hour ago I was sliding in the snow and It was runnnig perfect I should have assumed EA81 from your screen name, but I get in trouble every time I assume... So, pretty simple engine... Is this the same one that you were changing the fuel filter on? Did you ever get the real filter (as opposed to the vapor separator in the engine compartment) replaced? If not, good place to start. In your tune-up, did you replace the distributor rotor? If so, does yours use that annoying screw to hold the rotor on? You say that it is getting gas... if you look down the carburetor throat and work the throttle cable, do you see gas squirting into the carb? When it was running, did the tach jump around at odd times? (Indicating worn distributor bearings.)
HATCHY
Yes. I did both fuel filters. cap, rotor, plugs, wires, . I dont have a tach in my car, because I have a std hatch. barebones, not even a rear defrost , and yes i see fuel squirting in the carb and coil wire has spark just wont fire up.. I have had a disty pop on me before, and it ran rough then died. and never started up again. I let the car cool down last night and tried to fire it up, it staRTED FOR A SECOND THEN DIED, THEN NO MORE. Really weird..,, I just went out to fire it up. boom fires right up but dies wont stay running smells really rich Edited January 12, 2011 by HATCHY
mcbrat
I had a disty that went out like yours. it would start up and run fine, but then got worse and no start... I'd replace the disty if you have a spare, or just replace the module...

lostbrat
Keep it simple.. U said an hour before that you were our sliding it around in the snow? could be water moisture under distributor cap... You said spark at coil wire.but needs to get out of cap to spark plug.check for spark at plug end... just dried my brother s cap...no more skipping ....!!!!!!!!
