Rust
Can a 1993 loyale heater core be repaced w/o removing the dash? The heat works but its not great.
markjw
No Way....Not unless some one figured out how to cut one out. But, I don't think that would work, either. It's really buried. I've replaced a couple Heater Core's in the Loyale's...It's not too bad. The one thing that really helps if you decide to pull the dash, take pic's of how the harness plugs come thru the dash openings Before you actually pull the main part of the dash off. I think I have a few pics of the process. Edited January 16, 2011 by markjw
NorthWet
... The heat works but its not great. You may not need to replace it, just work on the underlying problem. Does the rest of the cooling system come up to proper temp? If not, check the T-stat. If it does, you might try CAREFULLY backflushing the heater core. Lots of people recommend using a garden hose to backflush the cooling system, but please remember that the domestic water supply has several times the pressure that the cooling system was designed to handle. Also, if it is related to airflow from the ventilation system, that points to other issues/resolutions.
Indrid cold
I know at one time there was talk of taking a dremel tool, cutting the end off the housing that holds the core and sliding out sideways.... I am not sure if it was different model that they did it on or how it looked when done... There were some controls that had to be moved out of way first but done alot quicker??? and then epoxied end back on etc.. possibly a search or input from others.... sorry not much help.. NorthWet
A couple of core removal links: First, a How-To from moosens http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/showthread.php?t=49973 And a reference to cutting the heater box (see post#7) http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/showthread.php?t=106397
moosens
Thanks for posting that , Pat. Hope all is well and Happy New Year. Whip out the dremel for the EA81 if intimidated. Otherwise just get to work and follow my post and you'll have happy, warm toes in short order. Cheers!
