floortom
I bought a 85 three dr. 4x4, When I looked in the shop manual, it was obvious there has been a motor swap. no timing belt covers. have never heard it run, bad head gasket, center head nut was laying in the rocker cover, I replaced the gasket, but it acted like the timing was off. It poped and crapped through the carb. I don't know what the timing should be set at. The head torque was set was 22/ 43/ 47. Valve lash set at 10 intake, 14 for exhaust If someone can tell from the stamped case numbers 565774 please let me know. Any web sites with this info? You can email me @ floortom65@msn.com Thanks
calebz
no timing belt covers So does that mean it has uncovered timing belts, or no belts to cover? It may sound like a silly question because you say you are asking about an EA81, but in 85, many soobs went over to the EA82.. Just trying to attain some clarity:D PS.. your name is floortom.. are you perchance a drummer?

Turbone
Ok, your car was made till (I believe) 88. Whatever you do, dont tell the parts store the year of your car. All they do is give you the wrong parts and argue with you. Its best to go with 84 as the year, cause its basically the same thing and the parts are correct. The specs are also the same. Timing is 8 deg BTDC Head torque is: 1st step 22ft lbs 2nd step 43ft lbs 3rd step 47ft lbs Check to see if there is a label on the side of the valve covers saying not to adjust the valves. This would mean you have hydraulic lifters.

Or, you can tell them you have a BRAT, up to 87. Almost all the parts for that are the same as well, and the parts store idiots have a seperate listing for it.
