rogerramjet Posted February 9, 2011 Share Posted February 9, 2011 Hello! Your expertise needed here. My soob is an 88 GL Wagon, 4wd, manual, single port fuel injected. Lately I’ve been having some cold start issues. In the past when I started it in cold conditions the motor would rev right up and stay rev’d up until I started driving. It won’t do that now. Also, when the engine is cold and I’m slowing to a stop and push in the clutch, the motor dies. However, once the motor is at running temp it runs like a champ, no problems. I have replaced the following items to no avail: both temp sensors, the air control valve, the egr valve and both solenoid valves. The pcv valve tested good and the air flow meter tested good. I also checked for air leaks in the intake and the egr hoses. So, I don’t know where next to look. Any advice is greatly appreciated. Thanks! I had a similar issue when my temp sensor (green electrical connector near the t-stat housing) was dead AND I had vaccum leaks at the intake manifold. How did you test the leaks? Carb cleaner worked for me, by spraying directly at the mating points with the engine running the RPMS shot right up. Does the temp sensor get power and does it have resistance? Have you checked codes yet? It sounds like a temp sensor, but you say you've changed them. Could be a connection issue. If it won't idle up when cold, the IAC isn't stepping up. naru Posted February 9, 2011 Share Posted February 9, 2011 You can`t test PCV valves.Just because they rattle,doesn`t mean they are good. A general tune-up would have been a better way to start. Make sure to replace the fuel filter and PCV along w/plugs/wires(test at least),cap and rotor. Make sure the EGR doesn`t have vacuum when cold.
