Front Diff ? on 3at

Recommended Posts

Last nite I was goin to replace on of the cv axles on the front of my girls loyale. I thought that was maybe why it was having shaking probs. I got the car up in the air and took off the ypipe and grabed the axle and it wiggled all over. Then I grab the other side where the axle is not broke or cut and it wiggles badly. I thought that the brokein axle boot lost all the grease and was maybe outta balance but no I come to find out that I believe the diff bearings are shot.

Does anyone know how much is involved in change the bearings? Should I just look for a different tranny?

Thanks for all your help subi gang

Hi Clay,

Nice to see another VanCity member here. I had my my 88GL front diff changed out/rebuilt and we had a really hard time finding one that fit in Canada, you might have better luck over the border if you plan on replacing it...however, there is ONE scrap Loyale in the Chilliwack Pick a Part right now though. Note that Aldergrove Auto doesn't carry anything older than 95Legacy anymore.

Check the diff oil...is it clear or is it black? (short little dipstick, passenger side of the tranny accesible from the engine bay) It should be clear. If it is black then you know your diff is in need of service or could have a bearing on the way out - which is what happened to mine. I had the tranny (3at) and the diff rebuilt and the diff costed about 200 and roughly another 200 for the rebuild.

Anyway, the sound it made while it was on the way out was almost the same as the whine of a remote control car....if that helps any.

Good luck,

Dean

Thanks Dean.

Sorry but im in Vancouver WA LOL

I know its a bearing cuz I have been losing diff oil and the output shaft wiggles around.

I guess im going to have to replace the tranny. It will probably just be cheaper that way.

That doesn't mean the bearing is bad. The stubs are inserted into the spiders. Idependant of the diff bearings.

It means the clip holding the stub in is getting weak, and the hole bushing the spiders ride on is a bit worn. but not an issue really.

the leaking is just seals. Thread out the retainer cup, and replace the seals. pretty easy.

Stubs always wiggle a little.

If the diff bearings were bad, the Ring and Pinion would be moving relative to eachother and causing all kinds of whine and grinding.

hi, if you didn't know , the axle joints come in 2 sizes, 23 spline and 25 spline. it is possible to put the 25 size on the auto trans which uses the 23 spline( except turbo) if so it will be real loose as you describe. this is just something to check in the odd chance someone put the wrong ones on this car. the leaking seals can be fixed easy , but check if you have the correct spline count axles before you decide that your diff bearings are gone .

If you do this, do one side at a time, and mark the relative position of the retainer and count the turns required to remove it. The retainers set the lateral positioning of the ring gear, so you need to screw them back in the same amount as you removed them.
