abledsoe24
Having difficulties finding information about cross-referencing manual transmissions between different year/models. I am in need of a used trans. for my 1998 subaru legacy outback, 2.5dohc, 5spd. I know there are variations of gear ratios/final drive and would like to be able to see the differences between different vehicles and wouldn't mind a lower rpm at cruising speed. Being at 60 and near 3k is annoying, also would like the knowledge of keeping it simple easy and stock. So if anyone is in the know of where I can obtain this information it would be greatly appreciated.
newsoobdude
You'd be looking for a first gen Legacy transmission as your 1998 Outback final drive is 4.11:1 and the earlier gens are 3.9:1. Not sure if the regular Legacy of the same gen (1995-1999) are 3.9 but someone with more knowledge will surely chime in. Check cars101.com for more info. Good luck and check the overall lengths as you might have to change out your drive shaft and DO NOT FORGET THE REAR END ALSO.
