1995 Impreza/2004 WRX interchange

Recommended Posts

There's a guy not to far from me(about an hour drive) parting a 2004 WRX,I have no idea what shape it's in or anything about. But is there anything on that car that would work on my '95 Impreza LX 2.2 AWD wagon.I would like to improve my car somewhat, and didn't know if anything on an '04 WRX would even work, but was sure someone here would know.

My plans for my car eventually,or at least what i would like anyway would be a LSD differential, some power upgrade wether it be a frankenmotor or turbo and I would love to get rid of the automatic tranny, but all that's probably a long ways down the road.

You just asked a question with several different answers.

I'll give you my opinion and will justify it.

Unless you have a secondary driver and feel confident working on the car yourself, I would go look at the car at least. If not, I would start looking for a used bugeye WRX. You can get one of those pretty cheap, may have a bit of miles on it but I would definitely hold out for one that has not been modded.

I fail to see why you would want a LSD in it other than it sounding cool to have. With your car being automatic, most of your engine's power is going to the front wheels anyway. I have no clue about the gear ratios between the two but I can bet money they are different.

If you were to look at buying the motor and the car was hit in the front, I would personally pass myself. The newer engines are interference unlike your 95 and there is a huge probability the timing belt jumped and bent some valves.

You said a turbo. Is that on the factory motor?

Not a good idea as the compression on your stock motor is a lot higher than the EJ20 that is in the WRX. This means you won't be able to run boost probably not higher than a few lbs. Not to mention, you will need different headers, uppipe, crossmember, downpipe, larger exhaust and a tune (To name just a few).

Pass on the car and buy an older WRX.

I would check out the seats though. I had a set of 03 WRX ones in my 2.5RS and loved them dearly. The 04 will have the one piece black ones which are kinda desired. The fronts bolt in no problem, they do sit about an inch higher and will require the reuse of your stock seat belt buckle. The rears are a different story. They require some modifications to get installed.
