New SVX! But it is possesed. Please help.

Recommended Posts

Hello! This is my first post ever, greetings to all on the message board!

Now, for the problems....

I bought this SVX from a dude up in Conifer. It was running strong and everything was working. So I was sold (I've always wanted an SVX), and he actually drove down the mountain to deliver it. I hopped in after the transaction and blasted down the street. It got dark, and I realized I did not have headlights....

1) Headlight low beams don't work! I've replaced the bulbs, checked the fuses, and the high beams work. Does this indicate the switch is bad, and if so, how would I go about fixing that??

2) HOW DO YOU DISCONNECT THE ALARM?!?!? The only way to make it turn off is go through 15 differernt steps that only occasionally work. I unlocked it one day, got in, STARTED the car and the alarm went off, and continued going. I am starting to fear my car.

3) The coolant overflow tube broke off the radiator (by the cap). Is there any way to fix this short of a new radiator?

.....and there are more little anomalies that keep popping up, but they are not anything I can't figure my way around.

Any help is greatly appreciated, it's a 1992 SVX.

Welcome to the USMB.

As for the headlights, they should have relays in the fuse box in the engine bay. Did you check those? It could be the switch, but you'd need to do a little more digging with a volt meter to track it down.

The coolant overflow tube.....you might be able to jb weld it or something similar with epoxy for a little while, but it will likely break again. Replacing the radiator is probably the only sure fire way to fix it.

For the alarm, you may want to check out http://www.subaru-svx.net/forum

Not much i can say positive about the alarm, cause the 92 model had 100% failure of them. What SVX.net recommends is putting the module in from a newer SVX, say 95 or newer, when they addressed the failing portion. It has same connector, and btw, have FUN getting yours out of the glovebox. What a terrible design of installation/removal.

Wow those threads were awesome, but I'm down to remove the whole module completely. No sense in keeping it, if the car RUNS while the alarm irritatingly continues to go off. Anybody have any advice/how to on that, I know from what I've read, it's a pretty awful process, but I'd rather go into it with a little background before I start ripping stuff out....

How can I get in touch with some parts? the headlight thing is still a mystery, I can't even get replacement relays in town...

You guys are fantastic! Thank you for the help!

Since the high beams are working then the relays should be ok. The trouble is most likely with the switch. Try grounding the return side of the low beams when they should be on. If they light up then the switch contacts are most likely the trouble.

I think I've solved the headlight issue, but are the headlights the little dinky outside lights only? All that works, the brights are those main bulbs? If so, then I guess everything is working, it just looks goofy. I think I'll run with the fog lights (inner) on and the "headlights" (outer) on? Is this how it is supposed to be, or did somebody switcheroo the light connectors? I know I'm sounding less and less like I have any idea what I'm talking about, but any help is appreciated!

And the "headlights" work with the switch, so I'm pretty sure all componants are ok.
