How does a mid-90s EJ18 compare to an EJ22?

Recommended Posts

It's kinda too late, since I already own one, and of course I realize that there's less power with only roughly 80% of the displacement, but with all of the high regard that EJ22s are held in around here, I'm curious whether the 18 is pretty similar, reliability-wise. It certainly doesn't look much different from the outside - is it pretty much the same engine with different bore/stroke specs?

One of the most indestructible engines. I had one with over 230k on one in a 97 Impreza coupe. I tried to kill it so I would have a reason to swap in a built 2.5 I had, but it just kept running. The person I sold it too is very hard on cars and it lasted a while after that (the car that is, he crashed it into a river) but the engine was still fine, I even debated buying it back for the drivetrain... You have a great engine, with slightly less power then a 2.2 that is all.

I've got an EJ18 in my wheeler.

Pushes the 30" tires pretty well. Revs happily to 6K+ all the time, and has never even hiccuped.

The EJ18 is a great motorI'd argue it more durable than the EJ22 even. It has thicker cylinder walls with no bolt notches, and larger cooling jackets around the cyliders. Most are roller rocker. Great gas milage when you keep your foot out of it.

Definately minus a few ponies compared to the EJ22, but when you are puttin it in a light EA body, it will still feel very powerful compared to an EA motor.
