mikec03
I only have 25k on the timing belt [subaru oem] so I won't change it for a while. I know that it is a interference engine [why did subaru do that!]. Anyway, I will look you guys up when the time comes. Thanks again.
johnceggleston
I know that it is a interference engine [why did subaru do that!]. from a certain perspective, non-interference is a luxury, it cost power. you can squeeze more a little power out of an interference engine with out increasing the displacement. Yep, thats the main reason. I think a First gen EJ22T puts out enough power and with a couple bolts ons and larger injectors, you have a pretty fast car. Who needs a 300hp STi? Mike, glad to hear the timing belt is fairly new. Edited March 19, 2011 by TheLoyale
3Pin
Isn't a 97 ej-22 a phase one? I thought the first year gen II 2.2 was 99 on a legacy?

Early 1996 was still Phase-I. it all depends on your definition of phase 2. most folks seem to refer to the 99 as the start of the phase 2 ej22. that's when they changed the heads and made the ej25 intake manifold interchangeable. but they certainly made some changes when they made the ej22 non-interference, in the 97 MY.
