from a certain perspective, non-interference is a luxury, it cost power. you can squeeze more a little power out of an interference engine with out increasing the displacement.

 

 

Yep, thats the main reason. I think a First gen EJ22T puts out enough power and with a couple bolts ons and larger injectors, you have a pretty fast car.

 

Who needs a 300hp STi? :)

 

Mike, glad to hear the timing belt is fairly new.

The first year of the Phase-II EJ22 was Late 1996.

 

Early 1996 was still Phase-I.

 

it all depends on your definition of phase 2. most folks seem to refer to the 99 as the start of the phase 2 ej22. that's when they changed the heads and made the ej25 intake manifold interchangeable.

 

but they certainly made some changes when they made the ej22 non-interference, in the 97 MY.
