Guest jclay
Good evening! My ongoing hunt for an Outback would have ended this past weekend except for the smell of burning oil and the salesman who told me it was the sealant they put on thier blacktop (yeah right...way to kill a sale, jackass!) Anyway, I did look under the car, but due to the plastic skid plate, couldn't really see anything. However, I could reach above the rear of the skid plate, pretty much dead center and suspect the leak was in that area...what is above the rear, center of the skid plate that could leak? Otherwise the car ran really well... a 2001 OBW with 105k on the clock... Thanks in advance, Jared

Fairtax4me
Wow. Does that explain the smoke coming from under the hood too Mr. #1 car salesman? The skid plate attaches to the jack plate right? Anything on the front of the engine that might leak will end up running right to the middle of the skid plate. Without seeing it: cam seals, crank seal, wrist pin access cover O ring, oil pump seal, oil pump O ring, Oil filter, oil drain plug, head gasket. Durania
That is a new one! I bet he said that an old man had the car and just drove it to the grocery store and church?
brycarp
I have NO idea how my experience with a 1996 EJ22 in an Impreza might relate to your 2001 car situation, but I had a leak that leaked onto my exhaust and consistently made an unpleasant smell from the burning oil, so I'll make sure you know about the "oil separator plate" on the back of the engine (between it and the transmission.) It has been redesigned a couple of times since the original plastic design. I had a plastic one: and replaced it with the most recent steel redesign: The word I got before I decided to pull the engine to repair this likely problem was that it's roughly 50/50 whether it's easier to pull the engine or the trans to get to it. I chose to remove the engine so it would be easier to do all of the other "sealing up" stuff and timing belt/water pump etc. while I had it out. The car is pretty much dry underneath now. A stark contrast to how it was when I bought it.
