2001 Legacy GT worth buying with tranny issues?

A 5mt owner says it grinds and pops out of 4th gear most of the time.. I've never dropped a transmission but how long does it take? And i'm sure it would be a hard find to find one?

 

the seller is asking $1500 btw with 220K

Check car-part.com to see how much one costs.

 

Shop time on r+r is around 7 hours with a new clutch being installed. Its a piece of cake on a lift, and not so bad on jack stands with a transmission jack.

the car? 220K highway miles and body is fine with no rust as far as I can tell.

 

says it needs a rear tranny mount but not sure if it's missing or worn out or what.

cool, glad to see you finding some options for replacement 1-3-2-4!

 

yes - be aware of the external headgasket leaks of the Phase II EJ25's that's in your 2001 Legacy GT. common issue. be nice to know if it's already been replaced, you may be able to tell by inspecting. they typically leak between the engine and firewall on the backside of the engine- a visual inspection is all you need. they won't overheat until they run really low on coolant.

 

the GT's ride really nice, i like them, the wagons too. the slave cylinders and hose for the manual trans are prone to failure too and are usually replaced in a set and a real PITA to bleed!

 

this engine requires a Subaru coolant condition due to that issue and has an extended 100,000 mile headgasket warranty. the dealer may be able to tell you if it's been replaced or not via the VIN.

 

trans swaps are easy but really annoying too. the process is easy and not much to it, it's just access and working under a car that's the hard part. good equipment helps. exhaust is probably my least favorite part, due to rust. outside of that you can have it on the ground in an hour or two....if all goes well.

 

trans shop where I'm from in MD would only charge $150 labor for a trans swap (10 years ago, with no parts or fluid charges). and they were a well respected place that was around for a long time. doubt that's the norm, but it suggests the job can be quick with good equipment.

One question I'd have to find out if its because of the clutch replacement but how long can you drive skipping 4th gear?

 

and the slave cylinder is that for the clutch?

 

the transmission is not that big of a deal for me... that's something I wanted to do with my other legacy but I wanted to buy a used transmission and crack it open to put in a front LSD.

 

how much does the transmission weight anyways? I did not find much info and the only one I found said around 150 lbs?

if it's just 4th gear, then you could rarely use it and just go from 3rd to 5th. probably depends what kind of driving you do if you'd need 4th gear a lot, like in steep mountains or something. but for daily driving in flat land i bet you wouldn't need it much.

 

i've lifted a bunch of them but have never weighed one. i'd say it's a good 150 pounds maybe a bit more. you can definitely move it around yourself on the ground. you won't be pushing it up into the car by yourself though. it's too awkward getting the right angle and lifting it while on your back. strap it to a jack.

 

maybe you're asking because of shipping?

 

i'm supposed to be picking up a 2003 manual trans GT parts car soon. not planning on heading to the northeast any time soon though.

I'm going to ask him did he have this issue before he did the clutch or after.. if it was after what could cause that?

 

i saw a picture on google and the angle of it but the driveshaft wont i have to unbolt it and let it hang down a bit? I'm sure it will be obivous once looking up at the tranny but heh but I don't have a subaru in front of me now.

 

If I did go that way I'd get a transmission jack for sure

yeah oil comes out where the driveshaft installs. fluid mostly comes out due to the trans being tilted when you go to remove it, has to come out at an angle. when you tilt it, it's goign to come out where the driveshaft slides into the tail housing.

If you drain it first not much is going to come out. :banana:

 

If its just 4th gear, its either the linkage/bushings are shot, damage to the gear itself, or the rail slider in the trans is worn. With 220K miles all of these are possible.

 

IT would be a good buy even if you paid a shop to replace the transmission most of the time. I like the 99 GT Wagon better but thats just looks, the ride, newer engine and newer creature comforts are worth it.

hmm he sold the car :-/

 

this other listing is up but it seems too much of a hassle.. key wont open doors or trunk so have to use the keyless and to open the hood you need a screwdriver :-/

What I don't understand is what's the cause of all these listings I see with a CEL on for misfires?

Bad plug wires.

People go to the parts store and buy the cheapest wires they can get, and they literally fall apart in 6 months. I just replaced the plug wires on my moms Camry. Original Toyota wires that were on the car for 12 years, and they still worked fine. It was $90 for a new set from Toyota, but they'll last until long after she owns the car.

wow i forgot that the 1999 model was the changeover to the SOHC

 

I've got a trip out to Michigan next month on the 13th and I'm running out of options.. I still think it's just cheaper for me to buy the car and pay for gas then doing flight plus renting the car.

 

i'm guessing I would need to fill the car up at least 2 1/2 times or 3 each way?

 

last I can remember i got like 310-ish from the tank of my 95 legacy.

finally someone answers back on one of the ads.. I don't think I will go with this one (1997 outback wagon) 5MT he says this direct quote from email

 

"Basically when you start the car and begin to drive when switch from 1st to 2nd the car does a jerk and then stops. Are you interested?"

 

I had asked what was wrong with the transmission because he said he just started having tranny issues.. I don't think I've ever seen a car do that?
