Because there are TWO rear main seals nestled on the crankshaft.... What's Up With This????????

GLCraig
The hub that the flywheel is bolted to, is pressed on the crankshaft, so Subaru used two seals.
Sonicfrog
Mystery Solved. It's not a main seal... It's an o-ring... An extremely flattened o-ring!

markjw
Whats the purpose of that o-ring? Just wondering...I think I have put flywheels on without that o-ring in place.

ShawnW
Whats the purpose of that o-ring? Just wondering...I think I have put flywheels on without that o-ring in place. I think its a machining change but am not sure. Most I have seen with it had hydraulic lifters but I haven't taken the time recently to do a verification of that. nickolai
I've taken apart two EA81s with solid lifters that had that O-ring. I'm not sure, but I think they all have it.

Is there any way to tell if a motor has hydro lifters besides popping the valve covers? My EA81 '84 GL has the flywheel O-ring, but I was under the impression it had solid lifters with the flywheel o-ring removed:
