Tony2toes
I just finished putting outback struts in my '95 legacy Dethwagon. Im very very happy with the new ground clearance. Heres my question, I wanna put outback wheels on it too for a little bit more clearance and improved "beefiness" BUT.... As it is with stock wheels it rubs when I cut completely one way or the other, its just this stupid aluminum thing that I can just beat back or cut off, BUT what I wanna know is how big a deal it'll be with the outback wheels? Has anyone had to do anything major.. or is it pretty much just a matter of trimming some "fat"? Random funny story, the first time i drove it with the struts and noticed they were rubbing at full wheel lock i was just careful for awhile, at one point i was forced to reverse like that though and it shredded one of my front tires.. subaruguru
It just comes with the territory of bigger tires the outback wheels have a different offset than a standard legacy wheel the outback struts are designed for this and have the spring perches set higher on the rear struts because the wheels set under the car more. I say just pound and cut a little bit and you should be fine. I did the strut swap on my 91 lego it is a very worth wile swap you will enjoy if you spend any time off the road. Cheers R. 1982gl4
I have no issues with my setup and I'm running the biggest tires i can without cutting i think they are 205/70r15's I just put them on yesterday so I'm having a hard time remembering what they are. No rubbing or cutting anywhere, and this is without the suspension mounts out of an outback to correct the caster in the rear, although I was worried when it was in the air, because the tires were less than half an inch away from the rear quarters. Tony2toes
UPDATE, Those purple wheels strangely work on that car lol, never thought Id say that but it looks "matched" It actually wasnt anything rubbing, the front swaybar was just basically positioned wrong and I fixed it yesterday, there are all sorts of noises in the front now though, and I think my CV joints arnt happy about the lift, I noticed clicking on sharp turns sometimes now. That and I think the sway links ar binding adn making noise with the increased angle, did you experience any of these issues?
Numbchux
Outback wheels do not have different offset than non-outback wheels of the same dimensions (15x6.5, I think). It seems to be very hit or miss how peoples axles respond to this mod. I've heard a few stories where the axles just weren't happy, no matter what (new axles, alignment, etc.). I would have though if any car was going to have a problem, my dad's rusty old '94 would have, but that thing went all over the country for years with the BG suspension under it. I have noticed a lot of wear with my swaybar links, they clang and rattle around and the bushings in the end of the swaybar itself went bad in about 100 miles of drive , but that's about it. My CV's have been fine. And thanks for the compliment, the wheels are just the start, I'm planing on tube bumpers color matched to the wheels soon
