Recommended Posts

Hey there,

I was wanting to buy a new radiator hose for my 1986 subaru gl turbo and wasn't sure where was the best/right place. If anyone has a recommended site please let me know. Thanks!

ps. What's the size of the hose? just wondering in case anyone happen to know. Thanks again.

Its best to go through the dealer - oem stuff.

You can buy hoses in the right size (dont have that off the top of my head, sorry) but usually you have to bend those into the right shape, which causes crimps and reduces the flow of coolant. For your cooling system since its a turbo, and overheating is one of their trademarks.... go to your local Subaru dealer, they should have pre-molded hoses, even with arrows of the direction of flow!

good grief. Dealer for a radiator hose? Only if you don't like your money

Just go to your local parts store. They'll be able to get a molded hose that will fit perfect.

If you'd prefer online, Rockauto.com is the place to go.

Hm. Id rather go with someone that knows a bit more about my vehicle. When I went to go buy upper and lower radiator hoses for a 1986 GL-10 Sedan, we went to Autozone, NAPA and Baxters only to hear "We dont carry model specific hoses, we have universal hoses that are flexible so you can bend it to fit your vehicle. Went to the dealer, "oh yes, we have those in stock, you need upper and lower hoses? *places hoses on counter* go over to (name) and she will check you out. Total cost for upper and lower hose was $13.90 ($6.95 each)

Now in its own respect, Discount Import Auto in Oregon, they had the lower radiator hose and thermostat that GD was looking for his Brat, and hose was pre-molded, dont doubt some places have them, but I have had no luck with the ones in my neck of the woods.

@92_rugby_subie

- I think I know what your saying. The reason why I want to buy a new one is bc the one on my car right now doesn't seem to be fitting perfectly. It bends the right sorta but you can tell it's being force to. The middle area is partially narrow. (like it's sucking the hose from the inside). I really appreciate all the help guys. I guess Ill go try autozone/advance/napa for price quotes, then see if it will fit. Thanks again.

^^ ask for a loyale... I always have better luck getting loyale parts than GL parts ...

lower radiator hose is not interchangeable between an EA82 GL and EA82 Loyale. The Loyale one can be trimmed to work, but is not correct.

If someone at Napa or Autozone (I don't know anything about baxter's) told you they don't have model-specific rad hoses, they should loose their job, as they're just lying because they don't feel like looking it up.

if it's doing that because it's too long, then trimming a bit off one end will/may fix it.

hoses +1 to chux - get them anywhere, it's just a rubber hose. i've never had a problem getting them.

rockauto.com and thepartsbin.com are great online vendors. just double and quadruple check part numbers with rockauto, their listings are terribly inaccurate.

In general, it is your responsibility to know what you are needing, as sometimes the parts counterman or his computer listings can be vague or futile.

If you know what you are looking for, you can pick the part from his parts crossing catalog.

I got hoses for a 97 legacy at napa, off the shelf, and napa will pull the vendors that the chain stores will show "listed, but not available"
