cylinder #2 and cylinder #4 misfire. 2000 EJ25.

had the engine out for a headgasket job/replaced the motor. no check engine light prior to and i used the original coil pack.

wires? pack? i hosed something up....AH!:confused:

i can swap plug wires.....but then how do i test the coil pack?

i have a 2003 legacy - i can swap those wires and pack i think.

Swapped wires and coil pack. Same codes. :-\

What a ridiculous debacle this is turning out to be.

once the scanner showed two codes. a P0302 and "P0302 P"?

what is the P?

Alternator - not sure, I just assumed it's fine. I can check.

Not looking good - there's not much left is it? Plugs....and....I don't even want to ask.....

Valves/heads - do I do a compression test or...?

misfire 2 & 4 shouldn't be the coil. those are shared 1/2 and 3/4, but who knows. swap the wires.

if any one else had this problem i would say the driver side cam is off, you didn't use the arrows did you??

and check the the cam sprockets??? probably not. save checking them until you have spent 6 - 8 hours scratching your head.

good call on the cam, i should double check it, i'd be ecstatic if that's all it was. it runs, moves and drives, hesitates alot, really lumpy, stalls on decel sometimes....not sure how good they run one tooth off but i'd expect worse?

i should swap the plugs too, just hard to imagine that's the issue.

Sorry, sounding like timing belt probably off.

Or other head issue(s).

On the same side(head) it's not electrical(plugs, wires,coil)

Gonna be more involved than that.

Can you feel it - or just the code?

Fuel rail o.k.?

oh you can definitely feel it. low on power, lumpy, stalls on deceleration up hill.

fuel rail, no clue, never messed with EJ fuel rails.

*** you're not allowed to ask that question Dave.

(i might need a head when i come pick up that exhaust part too) @#*(!$&*&*%&(!&*(

my willingness to help people out with car stuff just went WAY down.

Gary,

I'll probably be around. Even trying to clean up the garages a bit.

I'm really sore. Rode the mower for 20 minutes on monday - not a good idea apparently.

So I'm unlikely to head to the mountains. Just light work in garages. Good news is I did get lots of tools put away a week or so ago.

If I were in better shape I'd say I'd pull the head(s) and check them for warpage. Worst case we can do that when you're here (if you're not just gonna take the whole thing) but my engine stand is busy with an engine that's hard to set down. Cherry picker is folded up in the corner but those head bolts are tight and I can't rally help hold something with that much pressure.

Hey - atleast you're bright enough to not use the arrows!

I've even got some OEM crank and cam seals around if you need them.

Timing belt is dead on and I ran it with no covers and all the timing components are running smooth, tensioner and all.

Another thread guy said a new front O2 fixed his cylinder 2 and 4 misfire...really? wishful thinking no doubt.

So - what causes the misfire? The valves.....??? How can i test this?

Most likely on this particular head.

Could be fuel delivery/injectors possibly.

But I'm thinking mechanical probably. Usually the fuel delivery pieces are fine. Just thinking of simple(and easy) stuff first.

Which means more than likely the biggest job to fix - pulling the head. Sorry no new SOHC OEM HG's laying around. If you come on Saturday morning I may have a dealer on your way that has them though.

I believe my parts engine still has an intake off an 02 or so Legacy including injectors. Coil is missing and perhaps some other minor stuff.

i can't make it saturday, probably monday if you're available. PM me the town you're in and i'll call tomorrow or saturday if that works for you.

i need a drivers side head, i'll need to remove it from the engine and intake manifold?

thanks dave.

BIG SIGH

So let me get this straight. Either 1/2 and 3/4 or 1/3 and 2/4 share coils. If there is a misfire on one cylinder, we suspect a wire, but if there is a misfire on mating cylinders, we suspect a coil.

A friends 2.2 has a P0302 code that came back after clearing. It would idle smoothly for a few seconds, then drop a bit, then recover. Repeat this for a bit, then it would get really rough, jumping 150-200 RPM either way. I pulled the wire out of the boot trying to disconnect, but I got things back together, just not long-term. Now it runs just fine.

Code is cleared and so far isn't back.

130,000 miles. Major service at 106,000,(??Timing belt??) head gaskets not too long after, but I don't know about plugs and wires.

I'm thinking that if it hic-ups again, I'll just get her new wires. The plug that I pulled looked perfect.

Thoughts?

typically simply replacing the wires with Subaru OEM wires will do it. there are probably okay aftermarkets but these motors are sometimes not very forgiving - i've seen brand new wires cause cylinder misfires so i stick with OEM on EJ's.

swapping the intake manifold completely cured these two cylinder misfires. i have no idea what the root cause was but it was something on the intake manifold - injectors, fuel rail, FPR?
