NWSubie
So I just put a weber on my 1980 wagon (motor is out of an 86 hatch) 1.8 EA81. I have it running but I don't like that the carb is touching the top of the distributer. Is this just a matter of getting another adapter plate? The Hitachi had a black plate almost looked plastic but I did not use that one just the adapter plate to mount the weber. I am lifted 4" so I have a lot of room between the hood. I just did not know if its bad to use to many adapter plates I'm new to the carburetor world. Hoping to hear what some of you others have done. Also it seems to have a bit of hesitation when I push on the gas peddle. Did i just not get it tuned completely? I think I still may need to work out some vacuum leaks on her but I'm hoping to be driving her again soon its been a few months.
A1Fiddler
As far as the hesitation, does it happen when you suddenly step on the gas? Does it hesitate immediately like it wants to die or does it take a second or two for it to hesitate? If you have vacuum leaks then they are probably causing a lean stumble on acceleration. NWSubie
Well its not that it wants to die it just takes a seccond or to to accelerate. I dont seem to have a vac leak I sprayed carb cleaner on every sonetcion I could find and there was no leaks. She does drive I just cant step on the gas to fast or it will hesitate. If I give her gas and let off a bit then give her more she will accelerate. I doubt thats how it supposed to drive though.
A1Fiddler
It sounds like you have either too big or too small accelerator pump shot. I'm not sure exactly how the Webers work as far as tuning that, but I'm sure the manual explains it. I know on my Holley there are different size shooters and cams. From what you describe I would guess you're getting too much fuel from the accelerator pump. If the stumble is immediate then I would say you're getting too little fuel from the acc. pump. kanurys
A few questions: What jets are you running? Main1: Main2: Air1: Air2: Idle1: Idle2: At what altitude are you driving? Is your timing advance hooked up correctly and verified working? Also, just to be sure, check the float level adjustment according to the weber specs. Does anyone have those handy? I have no idea where my print out is... I bet you're running a little lean on one of the jets, but clear answers to A1's questions will narrow that down. NWSubie
Well im not sure what jets I am running, I bought the weber from Pooparu some time back and just now got it installed I believe he had said it came off of an EA81 like mine. It fired right up and idles great without me even adjusting it. As for the altitude im right on the Columbia river so not very high maybe 100ft. Im having a bit of trouble with the electric choke but when warm it runs great. I think it does feel like when i "step on it" its temporally not getting enough fuel. Because it will kinda sputter then take off. Which screw on the Weber would have an affect on that? Thanks for the help im an amateur when it comes to carbs. edrach
Your jetting is probably alright since it idles/runs well once it's warmed up. Here's a link to Redline on setting up the idle and mixture. http://www.redlineweber.com/html/Tech/carburetor_set_up_and_lean_best_.htm If you hunt around in their tech section you might find how to set up the electric choke as well as the accelerator pump. The pump squirts an extra amount of gas into the throat if you tromp on the gas; you're either getting too much or too little of that.
NWSubie
Thanks for the link I will look around for more info on the choke I know I probably moved it since when installing it I noticed it was missing one of its small screws so I removed to choke to go buy another screw. I'll have more time to mess with it this weekend. I'll aslo try to find more info on the accelerator pump im sure its just a matter of a few adjustments since she is runnning and driving now. A1Fiddler
My bet is on the accelerator pump if you've tuned the idle mixture pretty well and you're jetted correctly. You may have a vacuum leak though. Be sure you don't cause that will really mess with the carb tuning.
