93' Loyale starting problems.

Recommended Posts

I have a 93 loyale that has been sitting for 3 years. i just put a new fuel pump on (even though it was for an earlier model loyale, i dont think that is the issue) it sounds like it wants to turn over but just doesnt. help please

Take off the distributor cap. Make sure the rotor is turning while cranking. If it is not, the car was parked 3 years ago from a broken timing bely. Easy fix, all the instructions would be found by searching.

your car has an ea82 engine, for reference

To test the fuel pump, there are a pair of green connectors near the ECU. Plug these in and the fuel pump will cycle off and on. The relay is above the ecu on a bracket on the steering column, you willhear it clicking. If no click, swap the realy or check the fuse. The relay is a brown one right next to the green(ign) relay)

i took the relays out. there were 2. one brown and one metal round one. i took them in and the metal one was the fp. the fp works the car just wont start. it sounds like it wants to but wont.

I am guessing that it won't turn over right?

just a clicking sound?

In that case I might suspect the starter contacts are going or gone bad.

happened to mine, I 'tapped' on the back of the starter with a dead blow hammer. started right up after that.

hope that helps

If you haven't tried spraying some starter fluid into the intake yet I suggest you try that. If that doesn't get it going check the timing belts and the compression. Since the rotor is turning at least you know one of the belts is ok.

If we have spark and the belts are turning, we will want to check to make sure the timing is correct.

ITs possible someone made the repair and installed thebelts in the wrong order. A mis-aligned belt will give you poor compession readings.

I recommend you search 'ea82 timing belt' and follow the belt rotation sequences to make sure this is not the problem. also search youtube for 'art of subaru maintenance' episode #8

Do you know what model year of pump you put on? Loyales had several fuel delivery systems over the years with different fuel pressure requirements.

Hi,

Are you positive this is a Fuel Injection pump? They are higher pressure than a carb pump, more expensive too.

  • 4 weeks later...

ok she's running. well not on the road but running in the garage, i need to find a new hose for the tank to the pump(thicker of the 2 lines). it was a combination of the wrong fuel pump and bad plugs and corroded dist cap/rotor..... but now shes making a knocking/loud tapping noise when running? any clue to this new symptom?

change the oil, it might go away. The lifters have probably collpsed from sitting, they may pump up with a few revs and a spirited drive.

run some marvels oil in the oil for the first fw hundred miles, and see if that hepls.

otherwise it may need a new oil pump seal, which could have been a pre-existing symptom before this thing sat so long.
