So far; i was install for improved mpg.

*Oxygen Sensor, BOSH.

*Weber Carb 32/34.

*Fuel Filter, FRAM.

*Spark Plug, NGK G-power.

*Spark Plug wire, NKG.

*Band tires 34PSI for summer & 32PSI for Winter.

*5-30W oil. (only)

*No ARCO gas station.

*No leaky oil on the motor.

*Check no crack/leaky hose on the motor.

someone or everyone said that, try to install for new improved MPG-

Hi This is Jerry, i have an 85 EA81 hatch back and i drive 500 miles every week just to work and back. So with that i have installed a 93 imperza 1.8 engine everything all stock on the engine except air filter it has a cone filter. I use the stock Y pipe it all fit. I have a 86 RX 5 speed dual range tranny with 3.70 gears and a VLSD 3.70 rear also rear disc brakes. I am running stock tires 185/70R/13 now this is the kicker i am getting 38.4 mpg for now but i still have a bunch of things i want to do to get 40 mpg. The car weights about 1000 lbs. less than the imperza. Thanks Jerry

contary to what you installed *Weber Carb 32/34**

those Webers are not designed for fuel economy, they are a performance carb. The stock one is more efficient by quite a bit, even if the weber is tuned perfectly, a fresh stock carb will give better mpg.

You could bump the timing one more degree depending on how you drive it and if you use consistent same gas all the time.\

add another 1-2psi per tire. make sure brakes are well serviced, and nothing is sticking.

If you have a roof rack, take it off.

no air filter

only have a carb with filter. -Weber carb 32/34. useful replace new carb filter every 6 monthly.

yea, i need new Catalytic Converter, it's could improved mpg?

Carbed with an O2 sensor???

Cat nor plugged?

maybe a more economic muffler?

You never said anything about a new air filter? or a clean one?

what kind of aerodynamics' fit on my subaru wagon 87'?

i'm inserting for it..

you get good mileage. I have gotten 18 with the same cars.

Skinny tires aired up all the way, aerodynamic mods. that is all you have left to do with what you got.

aerodynamics - remove your side view mirror, in most states you can legally remove one side - i forget which one it is.

here's another subaru owners quest for 40mpg, you might have fun with this:

http://www.subaruoutback.org/forums/61-general-discussions/13562-why-wait-diesel-my-quest-40-mpg.html

remove all excess weight - rear seats, carpeting, dash, heck....an XT6 will even drive without the instrument cluster in place - i've done that before it's really funny to drive around like that. you can remove bumpers and drill out the bumpers beams to remove weight, remove all excess bolt-age - there are always more bolts than needed.

get lightweight pulleys, under driven pulleys, remove your a/c, remove your power steering, convert to XT6 electric power steering.

cone filter intake or K&N filter.

lower the car - cut a coil spring off of each strut.

XT6's do a little better with a straight through muffler, the stock muffler sucks. that's a 6 cylinder with a craptastic stock muffler though, not sure about your carbed 4 banger.

switch to synthetic oils all the way around.

regrease all your wheel bearings with synthetic grease.

there's a million things you can do, the problem is the law of diminishing returns is going to set in. the more you do, the less return you get.

drive really slow. between 40-60 mph you'll see your best mileage.

FWD manual XT used to be able to get 40-42 mpg on all highway driving. given it's aerodynamic superiority (lighter weight?), and multipoint fuel injection spider manifold set up, and FI instead of Carb you're not likely to get that high without driving like grandma - 50 mph tops. 35 is probably about maxed out...you're hitting diminishing returns.

the thought that "every improvement gains you 1 mpg so 10 more improvements will net me another 10mpg" is way off base and not even close to reality. it's a curve and once you've done the major things and have a great running car everything else starts producing smaller results.

Well, if you want me to answer my suggestion, i will give you ideas i had for my 95 tercel

smooth hubcaps(oldsmobile 13's)

I have a bunch of plastic sheets that are meant for wire shelves, and i was going to make a 'cadillac' style cover for the rear wheels, and cover up the rear rollpan to make the bumper flush with the tire well and gas tank, and do the same for the front around various frame members.

I have already removed the back seal and passenger seat for the purposes of cargo storage and trunk pass through. Any fuel economy/aero/hypermile mods are an afterthought/side effect of removing the seats

on the www.subaruxt.com page, there are some interesting diagrams regarding the engineering of the xt body, based on the gl body and what they changed to get a .029 Cd, and this may give you some ideas

  • 1 month later...
  • 2 weeks later...

I did the ej22 swap in my 4" lifted '84 hatch w/5spd d/r 3.9 lsd. 235/75r15's m/t .

Fully loaded for a few days excursions 2750.. I get about 25-28mpg going up several passes backroads..

I have a ton of frontal area including the overhead rack and a large cargo box ontop.. The jeep guys hate me..

One off these days I'll loose 50lbs and lighten up the load ..

also when you need to fix something in bfe...it's nice to be prepared...

I just got some Bridgestone Ecopia tires... reviews on the internet said some people are getting slightly better mileage. And they are marketed as a high efficiency tire. Though... some of that may be attributed to gentler driving due to the new tires... I know I will be taking turns slower now so I dont wear out my nice new set... my old ones I could have cared less about.
