88 DL starts then dies

Maf or disty are two very different issues, do you not have fuel or spark?

Identify which one is missing and adjust your diagnosis accordingly.

Its probably been mentioned before, but you did line up the timing marks with the 3 small marks on the flywheel and not TDC correct?

have fuel and spark, but as mentioned before, spark seems weak to me (and this is entirely subjective).

have errorcodes for something in the maf circuit, but maf looks good visually.

yes, i used the timing marks, not the tdc marks. problem predates timing belt replacement. that's just something i did "for fun." :)

engine has 260ish thousand miles on it, leaks oil from a hairline crack on the underside of the engine (head? block? whatever, it's cracked), and has poor compression in cylinders two and four.

new ignitor was a last ditch effort to revive a dying car for a little while longer. but honesly, i'm about halfway to gave-up and i'm not putting a ton of effort into it for now. unless anyone has a spfi ignitor module they want to sell me.

thanks for helping out so much, evverbody.

After reading this thread again I realize I copied/repeated the ecu code thing in my earlier post...apologies to those who had to read it from multiple posters. But now for something entirely different. A couple people have mentioned the disty...

My Loyale has had similar problems the last month or so. It would start, run rough. Not start. Start, run, die. Frustrating. Took it to a shop eventually (long story) which replaced the rotor and declared it fixed. It was better, but not great, so I replaced the whole distributor, we'll see how that goes.

Give your rotor and cap a shot, and new spark plug wires (also check the plugs if you haven't already). It's a cheap, simple thing if you have a few bucks and access to a parts store or online shopping. Also check all the sensor wiring related to the fuel injector, distributor, etc--besides stripped insulation, a plug may have come loose from time and vibration. It doesn't cost anything except time to check those.
