mulletkill
Happens at :08 here Happens at :05 here Any ideas? Car is a 2004 Forester XT, built 4EAT/converter etc. In person, the noise kinda sounds like tires peeling out.

mulletkill
Bump. Do you think it could be noise from the alternator/power steering belt? I just had my crank pulley replaced, it was rubbing on the timing belt cover, thought that might have been my problem but it is still making the noise. nipper
Remove the accessory drive belts and find out.
mulletkill
Remove the accessory drive belts and find out. Its not that easy because the screeching noise only happens when I'm going at least 40mph, and stomp on the gas. By the time I get somewhere where its safe to do that, wouldn't the car have either died or overheated on me?
nipper
No. Timing belt drives the water pump. You will be running off the battery and have no AC nor PS. Start with the AC belt first. Next do the 2nd belt on a safe stretch of road. You can drive a surprisingly long time with minimal electrical load on just the battery.
uniberp
If you replced the OEM crank pulley with an alloy aftermarket one, the new one may have a slick finish and allow the accessory/ac belt to slip and squeak even if it is properly tensioned. What did you mean "it was rubbing on the cover" That doesn't happen unless the pulley is loose or the cover is damaged. If the pulley was loose you would have had far more symptoms. 987687
I drove 30 miles with headlights and windshield wipers going just on battery power with a broken alternator, and no signs of it dying when I made it home. You could probably go a very long way on a charged battery with lights off.
