Guest rXSNRG
'90 Loyale SPFI. Stumbles bad when cold, won't rev above 3k, gradually increases as it warms up. Will dies after about 15 seconds, when cold if idle isn't kept above 2k. Showing 5 short flashes for a error code, nothing in the FSM about this that I could find. Any help appreciated. Guest WagonsOnly
Sounds like a fuel filter or a fuel pump on its way out...maybe gunk in the fuel lines too? Have you tried injector cleaner yet?
Guest Caboobaroo
from the sounds of it, it could possibly be your cold start injection. The cold start injection is like the choke on a carbed but its for fuel injection. It's a little injector that sprays extra fuel into the intake when cold but then gradually shuts off when the temp of the motor goes up. See about checking that because if it goes bad, it should throw a code. I'm not sure but thats what it sounds like.
Guest Flowmastered87GL
I see what you mean about no codes for 5 short flashes.. that would be a #5 code... the ecu codes page starts at 11 <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/images/emoticons/ohwell.gif ALT=":\"> You know my turbowagon kinda did that too, it hated to idle, but just tinkering with the screws on the intake and airflow sensor (and rebuilding the engine) seemed to fix it
Guest Skip
Sorry Russell, good guess but these systems may be licensed from Bosch but do not incorporate a CSI (Cold Start Injector) unless you have a CIS conversion (Oh Noah is the only one I know of) The SPFI ECU just increases the SPFI pulse duration while warming up. To the problem Check for codes with the black ("Read Memory") connectors connected. Read all about it www.troublecodes.net/Subaru/ Check the FI coolant thermo sensor (on the upper rad hose "gooseneck" There are two in this location. The FI coolant themo sensor is the one with wires connected to it, the dash temp gauge sensor wire plugs directy to the senor. Hope this helps Sounds like the ECU does not know the engine is cold
Guest rXSNRG
Could be, it won't start cold without starting fluid either. I'll check it out, thanks.

Subi81
Sorry to add to this post but I just had the same problem the other day. Here is my version of story Had been driving for like 15 min in 100 deg weather, temps all good. Come to a stop at a light, idle is good. Start to take off and no matter what gear, I can not get it over 2000 RPM!!! It doesn't act like it is stumbling it just doesn't rev. Completely floored it and nothing, shift to another gear makes power up to 2000 then wont go any further? So pulled over looked at stuff pulled efi coolent sensor and that didn't help. So limped it to the bank got some money. Then limped it to Pasta Pronto for some dinner. Car sat for 1.5 hours Attemped to start and it had a heck of a time but this was do to the coolent sensor being unpluged. Rich as heck once I got it started. Drove all the way home with no problems. plugged in the coolent sensor Drove all that night and this mourning 100 miles no problems? You guys mentioned something about a fuel line being plugged. Because the last thing that I worked on was the fuel gauge sending unit, in the tank. I tried to be carefull about getting debre in the tank but you all know how that goes. Could this be a clogged fuel line or something. Sorry for the long post. Thanks
