installing gen 2 dash

Recommended Posts

Is it easier to install the ducts to the sides in the dash before installing the dash, or do they get in the way. It looks like if you put them in first, the side defrost vents will be tough to hook up, plus it just might make the dash tough to get in place. Who's done it, and what did you do?

I recently took the dash and interior(the whole thing) from a 85 GL and put it in a 87 GL and on both, the dash duct/vents come off with the dash. Its all one unit.

What he said. Those side ducts stay with the dash. Ducting isnt really the issue its the hooking up of all the wires and getting the wires tucked where they are supposed to go thats somewhat a pain. Ive had my dash out 3 times now and dont really want to do it ever again (not to discourage u!). Just take your time and keep all your hardware organized and it will go fine. I think the hardest part is getting those top 10mm bolts tightened down back near the windshield. I have a very small 1/4" gearwrench ratchet that does an awesome job of fitting back there to get at them.

A 10mm deep socket on a 3/8" u-joint with a couple extensions makes that part easy:grin:

Theres also a hook in the center of the dash that it rests on that makes removal/installion easier. Just lift it off and the whole thing comes right off once the bolts are out.
