how much limted weight for tow boat.

alright.

but i dont have any hitch bar...i need to know what kind hitch model for my wagon gl 87'

 

Tounge weight is easy, use a bathroom scale and for a boat it should read on a scale.

 

The boat should have a weight tag hopefully someplace or ask a boatyard, same for the trailer.

good luck as u-haul is going to have a near impossible to find 250 dollar hitch for some bumper piece, class 2 at best, compared to buying ford f350 itches all day for 100 bucks and class 3 rating.

 

i modified my car to accept a ford f250 hitch.

 

If you cant get it from u-haul, it wont exist, since uhaul carries curt, valley, and other top makes(no reese), and their part numbers are the same as the manufacturer number which is the same number that any other store would have.

 

but, whatever you can find, will work just fine!

This is not answering the question... You are saying that you THINK it weighs that much... That is NOT the tounge weight. You are refering the the GVW (gross vehile weight) which is the second part of figuring what hitch you need. You NEED to know your tounge weight to determine what class of hitch you need... If you dont know how to do that (just read above, Nipper told you how to do this) then just get a class 3 hitch with a 2 inch reciever. You could just take it to a hitch shop and they can tell you what you need.

Just a cautionary. I really wouldn't try to tow over 1000 LBS. I have a custom tow bumper I made up for my GL and have towed some stupid heavy things.

Turning and braking is hairy. And I have 4wheel disc brakes on my car.

Can a GL tow 4,000lb ? Yes, I've seen it

Could a Gl manuever a 4,000 trailer at highway speeds? Absolutely NO

 

No one has mention Gross Trailer Weight Rating! It much more important the the tongue weight! The heavier the trailer AND cargo, the more its going to kick you around when driving and I have seen a RV pull a fullsize truck right off the freeway and into the grass, just because the RV hit a pot hole and started to sway.

 

If theres still a tag on your boat(it came with one) its usually on the transom next to where the motor mounts or in the pilot house if you have one. If its not there, have a buddy tow your boat over a truck scale. I've only used ones around me that are closed, but just pull on the pad, and look through the window. You willn't get in trouble, your tax dollars paid for it.

Is it an aluminum boat? If it is, that plus a 15hp engine probably don't weigh more than 350 lbs. How much does your trailer weigh? If it's just a small one-axle boat trailer probably not much. If it isn't a home made trailer (like mine...) it should have a sticker on it with specs/ratings.

Typically tongue weight is 10% of the overall load, so that would be 200 pounds on a 2000 lb load

If you do look in a factory owners book, it will stat that "Towing with your subaru is not recommended"

 

In my opinion, i think the driveline of a subaru with its engine would haul a 1 ton load on its back, or pull 5,000 lbs, if the subaru itself were heaveier, with heavy enough hubs and bearings to support the weight.

 

I have towed whole cars with GL subarus, once across 300 miles through chicago.

 

I would say if you are towing with a subaru, its not as relavant as what the car can do and the weight of the trailer, but the experience of the person driving, and understanding the dynamics of towing.

 

Towing a fishing boat with a subaru is cake. end of story.

Just because it can be done, doesn't mean it's a good idea ...

But ya, having a clue about towing does help.

Things like not slamming on the brakes on a corner... etc will probably help keep you alive towing a heavy load with a small car.

towed an aluminum john boat with johnson 9.9 on it with a GL. I could lift the trailer tongue single handed. there was no jack, only a kick stand on the tongue. I probobly wouldn't tow a fiberglass heavy boat.
