Issue opening back doors from inside.

Back doors in my 89GL open and close perfectly from the outside.

But from the inside you have to pull the door handle and really push hard to make them open. Kinda disconcerting for people riding in back. haha

 

What's out of adjustment that's making this happen?

This is really, really silly but are you sure there aren't child locks that were engaged somehow? I only recently discovered my car even had that feature.

You may want to take your door panels off and see if the linkages that connect to your door handle have slack or to much play in them causing them to not allow the latch to completely disengage. I find it odd that both doors would do this but I guess it happens. In my 80 wagon my rear passenger door would not open from the out side for the last two years I took my door panel off and found out that there is a small plastic piece right at the latch that allows for adjustment. I was able to turn it some and now my door open from the outside very nicely. Maybe to many years of people slamming your doors have loosened up the linkages in your car. I always find it strange when friends ride in my car and since its old they feel the need to slam my doors I am thinking I may put a jar in it and may my Friends put a dollar in it every time they slam it haha! Good luck should be an easy fix. Oh and if you remove your door panels be gentle not to break the little plastic clips that hold it on your may get raddling if you do later. And you may want to take oil up the linkages while the panel is off its a good time to do it.

Mine do this too, well the left side does, ALWAYS funny...

 

Unless you let someone else drive and youre stuck in the back, then it sucks.

 

Mine you just pull the handle and elbow the back part of the door and it opens.

first, check for child safety switches - usually located on the edge of the door, for rear doors, just under where the door curves to clear the wheel well.

will be just a small switch that will slide back & forth. one way prevents doors from opening from the inside, the other allows it.

 

if there are no child safety switches, then pull the door panel off and check for looseness in the linkages.

The child safety switches aren't set, because the doors DO open if you pull the handle and shoulder check the door.

 

I need to pull the door cards anyway to grease the window tracks. Did it on the fronts and they work much better.

 

So I'll check the linkages when I pull the cards. I figured it was something loose and not fully releasing the catch. Thanks for the advise! I'll check back in after I see if it works, or not works.

 

Oh, one more thing, how do I tighten the linkage if that's what it needs? Is there a screw or something?
