ontherun987
I bought my 1987 gl a few months ago, one of the front boots was ripped. I have made the repair, I replace the front right cv axle. Is this normal?
mcgus1
You need to "burp" the boot to get air in there to equalize the air pressure. Currently there is less air pressure inside than out and you have a vacuum-type situation. Slip a flat edge screw driver under the shaft end of the boot, if you can, to let air in there. Otherwise you will have to cut off the shaft end strap and then slip the screw driver under there, then reinstall a new strap or clamp.
idosubaru
i'm not sure how they're supposed to breathe but he's got you covered there. i've done 4 CV's in like a week and i was wondering about that. after installing the boot, the first time it heats up it's probably pushing air out somewhere but when it cools and needs more air, it's easier to collapse...or something like that. 987687
If it's lifted, I put the inner end of the boot just inward of the bumps it's supposed to clamped to. This works for both inner and outer boots and keeps them from doing that, helps the boots do better with more extreme angles.
MilesFox
The inner end of the axle is going to squish together and take up all that stretch in the boot. If the axle is stuck like you see it, it probably pulled out past the c-clip.
