Made it out fine, but as im driving down the highway my car just wont go anymore. Long story short driver side axle is shot both hubs are shot and all the berrings on both driver and passenger side (front) are shot. Firestone says its gonna cost at least $1300 to fix.

Whats the cheapest way to fix all of this?? Im really SOL on this one and they said they have to order the parts and it will take at least a couple weeks to get parts.

Info:

1993 Loyale 5 spd 2 wheel drive.

TIA

heres what i do when i break my 91 loyale. go to the local u pull yard and get knuckles off both sides(they already have bearings in them thatll work for awhile) get hubs/axles/everything off of the car with the least mileage. i abuse my car pretty regularly so i dont see the point in spending lots of $$$ on new stuff im gonna break anyway. also, myself and others have had more success with old used oem axles and a reboot(or not) than with aftermarket or remanned crap. good luck

There's no reason to spend that much for those minor repairs on a car that's probably not even worth that much.

Take your car somewhere else for work. Also, do what Subruise said or post a WTB ad for the stuff that's broken, and someone here will likely be able to send you the stuff you need. If you were closer, I could refer you to people who would do the repair for probably half of that quote.

You actually went out wheeling without knowing how to fix your own car? ChairSmack.gif

And in a 2wd? thumbsup2.gif

I usually dont give people grief for their mistakes, but I think this is a winner.

At quote of 1300 for repairs....

Wanna know what i would do?

Take that 1300 bones and go buy a 4wd Subaru ( of the same body style as the one you jusy messed up) you can go out wheeling in......

and use your old carcass for whatever backup parts you will likely break, some stuff swaps over.....

You are new enough you will learn this stuff no more hard feelings.

That's a funny icon!!

But yes, smack with a folding chair and move on. The best way to learn is to do something dumb, that's the only way to beat something into my brain

Fix 'er up and you'll be all good.

the front wheel bearings are common and can be "punched" out and back in with a brass punch. I went to a bearing supply and paid 10.50 each for NTN GOOD quality bearings no china junk. The bearing number is 6207 if i remember correctly and the axle is only $60. it took me two hours (lots of cigarette breaks) to do both front axles, wheel bearings and pads/rotors while there on the front of my GL... Get your buddies together and some beer. screw that $1300 noise...

Firestone says its gonna cost at least $1300 to fix.

Any quote from Firestone is 2x-3x too high. Huge parts mark up, $85+ an hour for labor, with inflated labor times.

Oh plus, they don't know what they are doing with older Subies, and will likely screw something up.

NEVER, EVER,EVER take your old suby to firestone.

Find a local suby specialist.

Agreed.

My brother took my car to firestone to have them look at it (forgot to tell him the tie-rods were going.

They said:

Wheel bearings on both sides shot (knew this)

Tie-Rods shot on both sides (knew this)

Uneven tire wear because of tie-rods and alignment (knew this)

Steering rack boot torn (knew this)

I figured $50 for tires, $50 for alignment and $60 for tie-rods, wheel bearings I have already, I figured so 200 bucks max and my car will be perfect.

They said NOWHERE will I get it done for under $1500.

I heard they do good work, but estimating is NOT in their "Good Work" Section.

Wheel bearings arent difficult, I have seen GeneralDisorder and Renob123 knock out front wheel bearings on an 84 DL in under 2 hours and thats TRYING to explain to me how to do it.

Axle is pretty simple as well, I believe I have removed an axle before on the same 84 DL as mentioned above.

if you use NTN 6207 bearings, they come sealed and there is no need to pack the grease, also the grease inside has been through rigerous testing to be enough to not force out. I have 35k on my new NTN's and never touched grease, also, I never disconnected the ball joint or tie rod, I just popped the strut out and removed the brake caliper, its bracket and the brake rotor. on car is MUCH faster.

Yes dumb part on me! Gotta learn some way though

I went bought a older GL wagon that the jy had bought it for $600 had pretty much everything except interior and engine so I brough it home stripped it down including 4x4 and im gonna put it in the loyale. Hopefully if planned right this will become a thread for my loyale (sam)

Already got:

Struts

Axles

power steering

Tomorrow I take off the driveshaft and rear end. I would just replace the bearings but once I saw how cheap the parts car was I figured might as well buy it switch everything out and make it 4x4

Believe it or not but for a 2wd Loyale it sure would go anywhere:lol::lol:

And upgrade I shall!! :lol::lol:

I'll keep posted on everything that is done.

But just wondering can I use the same transmission as the loyale? Or so I have to change that over as well? I know I have to switch gas tanks anything else that I should be aware of??

if you are going from FWD to 4WD, yes, you will need to swap the tranny as well.

but, yeah, have to agree!! GREAT Move!! hehehe  my old FWD GL went pretty much anywhere i asked it too - but i didnt really take her off road - not intentionally anyway!

ok deal on the parts car - have seen them cheaper, but i dont know the area you are in either...honest - we have never paid more than $250 for any of our Subarus - driver or parts!

We all started somewhere Rob. . . NOBODY in this thread can say they knew it all when they first went out wheeling. And *wheeling* to most of you is finding a bump big enough to lift a tire. (seen way too many of those pics posted like it's epic or something) lol

Easy. . .
