billy12360 Posted June 17, 2011 Share Posted June 17, 2011 check for spark on all cylinders. make sure its getting the proper ammount of fuel in to the motor. is it an automatic? make sure your transmission isnt stuck in 3rd gear or something. try smacking your cat? or replacing it. i was working on a subaru for a buddy of mine and couldn't figure out why it wouldn't accelerate. i asked my mechanic friend about it and he said the catalytic convertor was probably plugged. sent it to a muffler shop and it came back running way better. btw, i only singed up here to post this to tell you this, only because you are on the other side of the mountain from me. haha. idk if this makes sense though lol Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

NoahDL88 Posted June 17, 2011 Share Posted June 17, 2011 If water got into the engine, I'd do a compression check, it will save you a lot of diagnosis time if you find out right away that you've already ruined your engine. I'm sure its not what you want to hear, but if it makes you feel any better, I sucked some water in my dirtbike and had to rebuild the cylinder/piston assembly. I understand, I was 17 once and knew everything, and did what I damn well pleased and didn't listen to the people trying to help by giving good advice. After you've checked compression, (which will also help you determine if you've jumped timing) you should... Double check the plug wires to the spark plugs Spray the inside of your Distributor with WD-40 to get the water out. Pull apart all the plugs you can get to and spray the insides of them with WD-40 Check your fluid in your tranny and rear diff, if you get the car running again any water in those will destroy them from the inside out. Ultimately your car needs 3 things to run, Air, Fuel and Spark. It occurs to me if you havn't checked your air filter, you should get a new one, I swamped my 88 many years ago and didn't lock the engine, but did soak the filter and it would start and idle, but not accelerate. Dannoo93 Posted June 17, 2011 Author Share Posted June 17, 2011 im not doing the compression check because i dont know how to and i have checked the air filter i do need a new one....also im gonna replace the fuel filter soon......thanks for the info on the wd-40 though didnt know it will dry out water....so just take off the distributer cap spray wd-40 in there and spray wd-40 in where i screw in the spark plugs. 987687 Posted June 18, 2011 Share Posted June 18, 2011 The WD part of WD40 stands for water displacement. Pretty much all it's useful for is when your disty gets wet... That's all I use it for. Compression check is really easy. Screw compression tool into plug hole, hold throttle wot, crank engine. Look at gauge. Repeat for other cyls. NoahDL88 Posted June 19, 2011 Share Posted June 19, 2011 That seems very low, especially the 85, pull the fuel injector plug, hold the throttle to the floor and crank over a few times. pull all the plugs before you crank the engine over as well, but be careful with the plug wires, if they spark they could ignite leftover fuel. heartless Posted June 19, 2011 Share Posted June 19, 2011 yeah, those numbers do seem a bit low... I am going to guess this was on a cold engine? I also am concerned about the 85 - that is quite a bit lower than the rest. compression check "should" be done on a fully warmed up engine - but that is kind of a catch 22 if the engine doesnt want to run right... Yeah, pull your plugs out...pull the center wire on the disty for the coil to prevent sparking ... and unplug the fuel pump (or pull the fuse) so no fuel is going to the motor. crank it over a few times to clean it out, and try to get another reading.
