How much can my car be worth? (swapped 86 gl coupe)

I have mostly 'restored' an 86 GL coupe, along with swapping to full xt6 suspension and trans, and ej223 engine.

 

1986 Gl Coupe. Originally ea82 carb, Fwd 5spd. 110,000 mi on body

135,000 on driveline/trans

somewhere between 80,000-100,000 mi on engine

 

All parts are oem factory parts

 

NEW: trans rear seal, rear wheel bearing and seals

Castrol synthetic diff and trans oil

 

Full RX body kit. Wing is body color, sideskirts are gold

 

Framerails have been repaired with new metal.

Rocker sills and rear quarters repaired with fiberglass

stainless steel fasteners on the fenders, gas tank, and fuel/brake line brackets. All fuel and brake lines have been re-conditioned

Anythig disassembled has been treated with por-15 and stone guard in the wheel wells, underbody, trans tunnel.

 

The interior carpets are immaculate, and all the plastic is in great shape, save for a few scratches in the rear.

 

Seats are in great shape, but the vinyl is cracked in a few places

 

AC would be functional with the right hose to make it fit.

 

I am interested in how much this car could be worth, considering the condition of the car itself, and what it has for a swap. This is a very clean swap, looks factory, the harness is in a proper location and the ecu is under the steering column.

 

IT won a best vintage soob trophy at the Don Miller meet in Madison.

$2,000 is usually respectable for a good condition car ready for daily driving duties. around here it seems like if you can wait until winter when the snow flies and jan when people start spending their tax refunds it'll be easier to get a higher price for it.

 

around here the old stuff rusts away so fast that no one is familiar with older subarus - i think demand follows the same trend. out west i think older soobs are more common and it's a slightly different ball game.

 

if you find the right buyer everything changes of course, it would be worth more to that person.

I got 1500 for my wagon. It was 4-lug, but the 5-lug swap won't add much unless you find someone looking for it.

 

running, AWD subarus seem to be commanding a premium these days. So you might see over $2k. But I would be surprised.

A guy down here told me that thete are hardly any old subes around because they are to hard to work on.:rolleyes::-\

Probably at least 2k.

 

Probably 3k depending on the rust conditions. I see the lifted scoobs with EJs going for 4K-5K so Id imagine that with a clean swap, 5 lug, clean interior and exterior it could fetch 2800 or so.

 

Hell, I see Loyales with 180k miles go for 2k here... Just gotta set your price high and wait to get an offer near there. :rolleyes:

i can relate, he'd be making fun of me - i can't stand carburetors. they're antiquated high maintenance trash in my opinion. requirement for my last lawn mower was that it did not have a carburetor - and i love it - my 20+ year old Kubota has fired right up every single time after a long winter of sitting and i love not doing a thing to it ever in years. no more tweaking, cleaning, disassembling carbs or treating gas. i'm sure they're great in terms of simplicity if you know what you're doing though, so i'm just like that dude.

I figure this car can be worth towards 3500 in the collector market. I have repaired the rust underneath with metal and welding.

 

TO go for the 3500 dollar mark, i would intend on swapping agx sturts, or even sti struts or springs, and i would like gold rs or wrx wheels, or even lgt wheels.

 

It has slotted brembo brakes in the front, for the xt6. I have parts to convert to 2 pot calipers and rotor, or at least the larger rotor and the xt6 caliper on the larger bracket.

 

The engine is tight, but a reseal and timing belt would be due soon based on the presumed mileage. I would like to build a franken motor with cams and header, eventually.

 

I have no interest in selling this car, but like on the antiques roadshow, the value placed on an item is based on what it should be insured for.

You need to have patience to work on them.

My lawnmower is around 20yrs old and has a B&S engine on it.

I leave it out during the winter, covered with just a plastic recycle bin.

Come spring when its time to mow, I give the fuel bulb 3 pumps and usually on the 3rd pull it starts. I've never touched the carb, just clean the filter once a year. I think I'm only on the 2nd sparkplug and 3rd blade.

And there are many race cars that still run carbs on them.

Unfortunately on the west coast that would hurt it, because ours are rust free to begin with :D

 

But I would say around $2000

 

That is too bad. And also what is worse, they sold many more millions of them out west, and they are stilla roundin abundance. I rescued the one ea82 around here, that would probably be in a junkyard if i didn't snatch it up for 300 bucks.

 

I am not going to *************** about a rust spot on a car that would otherwise not exist.

Great job on rescuing that 3-door; I like the color and interior. The 3-door is my favorite of the ea82 series - still looks modern, great economy, plenty of cargo space. My 87 gl 3-door is the 4wd and I converted from auto to manual d/r.

 

You have given me some ideas on upgrades, thanks a lot. BTW, is your You-tube video #20 on your 3-door on the web?

Collector market? for a not-even-slightly stock '86 coupe? :lol:

 

 

Modifications almost never add value.

 

 

The right person might recognize it as being something special.

 

If you want to list it for 3500, more power to you. But I wouldn't hold your breath.

Car is looking good. One way to find out what it's "worth" is to auction it. Put a reserve on it and see what happens. You only NEED one buyer. If someone with the money desires what you have...well, there you go.

Edit. One way to get money back from these old Subarus is to drive it out.

 

I buy a gl on ebay for $300.00, go get it, 160 mile round trip. Fix the usual and drive it for a year. Sell it for $1600.00. Works for me.
