how do you replace headgasket on a EA81T

Recommended Posts

raise the motor. this is a whole different bag than a transverse fwd engine. Its an ea82 for 87

Simple enough to do. the trick is getting the motor out. Remove the turbo and intake after the motor is out. Those come off in one piece, so dont go removing fuel rails and such

Leave the intake intact, remove the bolts that bolt it to the heads, flip it up out of the way onto the driver side fender, drop the downpipe off of the turbo, remove the radiator and fans, bellhousing bolts, torque converter bolts if its an auto, engine mount nuts on the underside of the subframe, and pull it out.

Best way is to pull the engine.

Better way is to push it off a cliff and forget you ever saw the EA82T. Poor excuse for an engine in the opinion of most around this board.

Do a good job on the HG and replace all the hoses, and it will do good.

These opinions are garnered from the lack of upgradability of this particular engine, but in stock form, it does the job relaiably(with proper maintenance{cooling system}). Although the design of the heads is the most limiting factor for upgradability.

thank you everyone for their input. i forgot it was a ea 82t im planning no major upgrades. Just exhaust and intake and possibly a bov to reduce wear on the turbo. my plans from here are to pull the motor and replace the head gaskets with felpros.

BOV will not reduce wear on the turbo and is a stupid, stupid, stupid way to make noise and reduce the performance of your engine. Modern Subaru's use a recirc system for a reason - upgrade to a TMIC and recirc valve combo - best things you can do for that engine's longevity along with replacing all the coolant lines.

Anybody ever O-ring the heads on a Soob, whatever year/engine?
