Has anyone had an issue with buying used racks on ebay? Good or bad who did you buy them from.

 

I found this on ebay rebuilt with the core charge built into the price.

I am considering a rebuilt so I don't need to replace inners, worry about boots etc.

 

For some reason my Mechanics worker (meaning he doesnt know me) quoted 3 hrs to do this. My mechanic quotes book then charges actual whichever is lower.

 

From what i can see:

Jackstands

Remove front tires

dissconnect tie rods

center steeringwheel and tie it off.

disconnect sterring shaft at clamp

disconnect PS hoses

remove four bolts

remove rack

 

repeat whith new O rings to install

Set toe in

 

This doesnt seem like 3-4 hours to me. Looks like a drioveway project over 2 days (bad back folks so no rush on anything under the car)

 

Blue has new outer tierods. A used one would need new inners and boots

 

Inner tie rods 40.00 ish off ebay, maybe another 20.00 for boots

 

(my brain isnt here so bear with me this week)

A mechanic that is proficient will profit based on the book time. I could see 3 hours with complete removl and replacement, given the time to break everything down, lift, jacks, etc.

What is the hourly rate?

 

2 hours seems more likely if everything comes part all at once, by someone that does this for fun.

i think he is 95.00 an hour, but i screwed up and am broke on paper and have to fix that over the rest of the year. Blu needs a rack otherwise he wont pass inspection. i may just get a used one to cut down on cost.

I did this job once, not to bad other than space to work with when disconnecting and reconnecting the power steering lines and also the steering knuckle (and getting that back on so the steering wheel is straight). The car is old and nothing ever goes smoothly on an old car.

inner and outer tie rods are new, I have all the specialty wrenches for hoses (without needing a BMF Wrench) and expect other fights. The knuckle had been removed 5 years ago for a lift so its not like it had a happy home since 1997 :)

The jack plate is in the way, and the front sway bar needs to come down. The hoses are a PITA, but once you get the steering shaft Ujoint off and remove the clamps you can pull the rack down a bit and have more room to get to them.

didn't know you had a thread before we PM'ed.

 

what they said about the fluid lines - those "can" be the worst part of the job and require a lot of time bending over the fender, not good for the old back. have a peak and see how much space your DOHC gives you down there to work with.

 

does the exhaust manifold need to come out of the way.

 

fairly certain i've never removed sway bars to replace a rack, but i generally remove as little as possible and spend more time wiggling/angling something out too?! :lol:

I popped my head under the car. Blue is lifted, it allows acess to the plugs, but not the rack so much.

 

The oddest thing

 

It stopped leaking. I am going to take it to the car wash and wash the underneath but i no longer smell PS fluid burning. I haven had to add fluid in a month or so (it was every 3 weeks). I am still getting a rack as i know i need one before winter, but this would buy me so much breathing room.
