e81 autotrans question

Recommended Posts

Picked up an 84 with an automatic transmission. Not what I would like but I want to run it until I can swap to manual. Did an atf and gear oil change but it still has an issue and I wonder if this is something that can be adjusted.

At low rev the car pulls like the trans is too engaged. My idle is fine. This is most pronounced in Reverse. In all cases Drive, Reverse and even Neutral to a degree the effect is has a kind of wonky feel to it and shakes the car a bit. Idle Reverse is the most wonky. Once I rev up and head down the road in any gear she seems sweet.

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance.

How long did the car sit for? How many miles on the trans? You could be experiencing the first effects of the governor going south. The autos eat governor shafts when the diffs begin to where out.

Here's a link from the USRM(Ultimate Subaru Repair Manual)

Thanks Qman,

It hasn't sat much as far as I can tell. 150k on the trans.

Thanks for the link. I pulled the governor and it felt "smooth as a knife through butter" with little to no "applecore". Swapped and adjusted the shifter assembly.

I guess the problem is deep inside.

Thanks again for the help.

Yes that may be on my list of things to do. I figure I run it and hope she holds till I get the time.

Is there a year issue on that or can I plug in any manual trans from an e81? Personally, I want to keep this thing as stock as possible. I roughly understand the mechanical on a manual, pedal cage... but is there any electrical or dash readout issue. Do the plugs exist for the high/low to show in the dash and does the dash have the bulbs?
