bheinen74 Posted July 7, 2011 Share Posted July 7, 2011 I need to tow dolly a ea82 autmatic 4wd. I am taking along 10mm and 12mm wrenches as well as various other tools to unbolt the driveshaft to the rear diff. I know there are 4 bolts with nuts and lock washers holding it there. I am not quite familiar enough with these ea82 cars. Do you think there is a way i can then pull the driveshaft to the side near the rear diff up and ratchet strap it in place so it doesnt happen to rub on the rear diff input which wil be spinning while i tow dolly the car. How else does the driveshaft mount, any special mount bushing or etc, I will also bring a hog pan to drain the fluid out if need to.. need to dolly the car about 65 miles. any help soon please. desertsubaru Posted July 7, 2011 Share Posted July 7, 2011 (edited) If you take the four bolts out on the Diff and the two carrier bolts out then you can just pull the shaft out of the tranny. The drain pan will be needed because fluid will come out of the tranny tail shaft. You could also just tie the shaft to the exhaust pipe to keep it out of the way. Ricearu Posted July 7, 2011 Share Posted July 7, 2011 i would just ratchet strap the rear of the driveshaft through the doors just off to the side. it's like an ej in that it has a carrier bearing that won't let it come out of the transmission. I wouldn't want to let out the fluid and all that because inertia will make more come out unless it's completely drained and that is just too much work. markjw Posted July 7, 2011 Share Posted July 7, 2011 Yeah, I've done this a dozen times. Don't pull the drive line. Just separate it at the diff, and ratchet strap it to the exhaust. It's really handy to jack up one rear wheel so you can spin the shaft to access all the bolts. Otherwise you'll be pulling the car forward, trying to get the shaft to turn a little. Take a 3ld sledge and/or a big prybar in case the shaft flange doesn't want to separate from the diff flange after you get the bolts loose. Adjust your side view mirrors and keep an eye on those rear tires on the towed vehicle. If you get a flat, you'll never know it. Take a decent spare tire with you, too.
