beamrverbeek
Hey i was wondering if anbody knew if the 2.0L ej205 out of A 2002 Subaru wrx would work in my 84 subaru gl wagon with all 1990 subaru legacy running gear wwould work. Im curently working on my 84 and i bought all the running gear out of a 1990 legacy and gonnna put it on my 84 so i can have front and rear disc brakes and have the 5 lug bolt pattern on it. also i found a good deal on a 02 wrx engine that i wanna put in it too so i was jus wanting to know what problems i might run in to thanks and let me know. subaruguru
the engine will fit the legacy trans will fit IF it is a 5 speed the rear diff will fit that much i know for sure but the running gear (suspension, 5 lug stuff) will take alot of work to make fit do a few searches it has been covered more than a few times. WELCOME TO THE FAMILY lol tons of info to have here and lots more good people. cheers R.
Logan K
I'm not sure if your stock 5speed will stand up to the power from the ej20, I've heard that they arnt much stronger then the 5speeds in the ea82. I have a JDM legacy rs 5speed and 4.11 rear LSD in my Ej20 swapped RX and i love it, although the ratios are a little short for freeway driving. Maybe you could see about getting a WRX tranny/rear end to go with the motor?
subaruguru
the legacy 5 speed is stronger than most think and unless he is running a turbo he should be fine i have beat the hell out of the legacy 5 speed and NEVER blown one up with a stock engine. WoodsWagon
EJ205 is DOHC and will not fit between the framerails of an 84 wagon. You can notch and reweld the framerails to make it fit, but it doesn't just drop in. Rear suspension is completely different, so none of the legacy parts will work. Front parts can be made to work, but it's a hodge podge of hybrid axles to get the width right, lower control arm reaming, and tie rods to make it fit. If you want 5 lug disk in the rear, your only option is XT6 parts. You'll also need nissan 200sx rear calipers and cables to switch to rear e-brake. If you're running a turbo motor, you need a turbo wiring harness and ECU. I'd run with the EJ22 you got from the 90 legacy. You'd be suprised how well it does in the lighter 84 wagon body. It also fits without having to hack up the framerails. Do the motor and transmission swap first without touching the suspension. Drive it that way for a while before you tackle the 5 lug swap. You can also use a carb and distributor with the EJ22 1990 legacy motor, which would simplify the swap into your wagon. The factory parts to do it are available overseas, or you can modify an 83 ford escort distributor and weld a carb mounting plate to the FI intake manifold. subaruguru
IIRC the DOHC and SOHC are the same width the only difference is the depth might just be having a moment i can check tomorrow. cheers R.
beamrverbeek
The tranny does come with the motor
WoodsWagon
IIRC the DOHC and SOHC are the same width the only difference is the depth might just be having a moment i can check tomorrow. cheers R. I can tell you for certain that the DOHC heads are much wider than the phase1 SOHC heads that were on 90-99 2.2l's. The phase2 99+ SOHC heads are much bulkier, so that may be what you're thinking of. Keep it simple, swap the 90 legacy engine and trans in and drive it. I think you'll be suprised at how well it does, and if you need more power later, you can use a 2.5l block with the early 2.2 heads to get a bit more. If you found a 90-94 2.2l turbo legacy, that has the same phase1 SOHC heads that fit in the early bodies. You will have to notch and weld the crossmember to fit the up-pipe.
