obk25xt
Ok yesterday and today, pulled the trans, bolted the duals to it, bolted the clocked case mount to the rear case and the crossmember to it (BUDBUILT). Started to get it all into place, cut open the floor, beat the spoob out of the tunnel with a BFH, and eventually (trans in/out bout 4 times) got the whole shebang where it needs to be. Tomorrow I am going to build crossmember mounts and maybe start to figure out drivelines. Ended up having to take out more tunnel than I had planned, but oh well, I have awesome clearance. Lowest point on the truck is the front shackles, then the hangers for the 63's, then the crossmember. Best way to pull the trans Budbuilt clocked rear case mount Up in the truck, where its gonna be, approx 2.5" below the frame. And how much I'm into the cab, I still plan on running a bench seat…..

subarubrat
Great work! I have always wanted to grab a solid axle Toyota and do a big lift, run 44's, a V8 swap and all the trimmings, but I have never found the time to do it.
RustyBrat
holy jesus.. this is a beautiful example of how to build a toyota! always wanted a first gen... i know of one with all the glass busted out parked at a farm.. maybe i will go talk to them... obk25xt
Thank you! Its "done" for the most part. Have a few finishing touches here and there, but the truck is READY TO WHEEL!! Almost flat belly, 24.5" to the bottom of frame, its a lowrider with great flex, and rides smooth….
ezapar
I can hear you giggling from here. Awesome work.
obk25xt
Finished the shifter boot/console permanently. Used 3 Mazda 626 parking brake boots, had them sewn together and a piece of stainless I had laying around. Turned out great, secured with velcro strips, easily removed. Also, made rear diff armor out of a, 8" weld-on pipe cap. Couldn't be happier, this truck is READY TO WHEEL…. Just need to take some time off work so I can go out and use it… pictars…
ezapar
Evans Creek is open on April 15th. . . Let's head up soon after that.
obk25xt
That's quite a drive for me. But wheeling (legally) anywhere is quite a drive for me. As it is, Browns Camp (TSF) is the closest and that's about 1.5 hrs or so..... I'll do some Googling on Evans Creek. We are supposed to have the Yacolt Burn ORV open up approx 9 miles of trails for trucks in May I think. Edited March 23, 2015 by obk25xt
obk25xt
Some copy/paste updates from another forum I frequent... I built a headache rack the other day. I used the internal roll bar from a Scout Traveller top. I had to modify it slightly so I could keep the toolbox tight to the rack. I pretty much built it to haul my canoe to the river, but I'll probably weld some stanchions on it and mount a couple lights or something. Here it is before I cut the gusset out of it. It would make a pretty decent lil rack as-is if I didn't have the toolbox, but I didn't want to give up the 5"-6" of usable bed. So I started cutting it up a lil, and I Put approx 24" of angle down the bedrail also. I'll probably weld some eyes or something to the angle and the hoop to, for anchor points/tie-downs. Then I painted it, and remounted my CB antenna. Works great for the canoe, it ONLY touches the rack, doesn't touch the tailgate at all. 2 point fixed bridle in the front to my tow points, and single point in the rear where I cinch it tight… Works perfect… :flipoff2:
obk25xt
Made some progress over the last couple days. Swapped the bent ruf packs for some 4" pro-comp rears I picked on the cheap. I think the truck is too tall now and I'll probably change it up again real soon. They ride nice tho. Then I dropped the rear bumper and bobbed 11.5" out of the bed. I really have been anti-bob for the entire time I've had this truck, but it seems to be the natural progression. I'm in the middle of building a rear bumper right now, its gonna turn out pretty slick I'd say. I drove the 2x4 rec tube into the frame 14" before I started building off of them. I am definitely over building the rear bumper, and it is not going to be removable, at all. It will tie into the frame through the rol pan and the lower quarters. I'm gonna have to make a bolt on receiver hitch tho, so I can still tow my lil trailer haha…… Here's where I'm at for the last 2 days….
obk25xt
Finished the bumper, and redid the front springs, again. Am gonna pull them out one more time and add one more leaf. I like the height, but they're a lil too soft I think, its all trial and error. Next is paint, was gonna paint it all "satin espresso" but its a lil too dark. gonna end up somewhere between the original color and the dark brown.
bratman18
That has to be one of the best bob jobs I've seen. Awesome job with all of it.
obk25xt
UPDATE! Bought some brand new OME rears and put them up front. Bought some 14" shocks for the front and put my 12's in the rear. Built some bump stops (I'm calling them THUMP stops, because currently threes NO rubber anywhere in there!). Just a lil more fine tuning and I think it will be 100% dialed. Also, I am on the hunt for larger tires. Thinking its time for some 38's. I'd really like to end up with a set of 38/12.50 tsl sx's like my 36's are. PIX Heres what the bump stops look like, I need to make the frame-side landing pad for them a lil larger and add some rubber material. I'll probably end up with some belting material between 1/2"-1"… Definitely gained some droop between the OME's and the longer shocks. The front end just falls out of there now. And these springs have no problem going negative. Hopefully they can take some abuse without getting all wrapped up.

obk25xt
Thanks! Yeah, I have zero regrets about the extra work it took me to tuck the drivetrain…. It was a PITA when I was doing it, and I was frustrated a few times and kicking myself for even thinking I needed it. But its bada$$ for sure. It's damn near flat under the cab. Looks awesome in that vid too...
ezapar
It's SOOOO expensive to tuck the tummy on my TJ. So for the time being, I'm stuck with the pooch. (photo saved from the add when I bought it)
obk25xt
Welded new shackle hangers, mounted f150's, really liking the new travel I've gained with the longer shocks. The f150's do everything better than the 63's did, but they are def not as tough. Truck needs a new steering box, and this one needs resealed. Ordered weld on beadlock kits. Looking for 38x12.50's……

obk25xt
Updates… Built bead locks, put ARP studs in the wheel hubs and the tops of the knuckles. I broke a wheel hub off and that influenced the ARP's… Then, decided I NEEDED some new tires. Which really I didn't, but I have a problem with tires, so I bought some 38x13 Creepy Crawlers... Boom, she looks good….. Will prob need to do a lil more trimming. Headed to TSF on Saturday…. Edited December 4, 2015 by obk25xt
obk25xt
Oh, and I bought a tow rig and a trailer, so I guess you could say things are getting serious haha... 1998 12 valve, quad cab, 140k, built auto, tuned injector pump, TC lockup and exhaust brake, its pretty sweeeeet... ezapar
I needed that this weekend. . . Had to do the walk of shame while I spooled out the winch to pull me out of the mess I was in. Broken outer front right axle. Nursed it back to the freeway and had to call AAA. First time in 20 years 4Xing that I had to ride in a tow truck to get home. Pride hurt.
obk25xt
Spent friday night cutting a lil more on the fenders, and beating the spoob out of the firewall and rear fender lip. Went to Browns Camp on Saturday, it was pissing down rain the whole day. After reading about the Creepy Crawlers about a million and a half times I wasn't really expecting them to do very well in the wet/mud. They did AWESOME, way better than I thought. Theres a greasy hill on Firebreak that a lot of guys have a tough time getting up in the nasty spoob. I pretty much crawled right up, it didn't feel as tough as they were making it look. Went into lower crushers and took the easy (right side) line up with no issues. I ended up getting in to the middle of crushers about 2/3 of the way up and the creepys are badass….. If they hookup like that in the wet, I'm sure they'll be like magnets in the dry. ran them at 8psi for an hour and then dropped down to 4psi. About 3 hours into the day they were breaking in nicely and wrapping around the rocks like silly putty. Didn't get many pics but heres a few.
