mickytrus
Hello,,,, again...... My last head job I did..... I had thought that there would be a gasket for this surface I am about to mention......... NOT..... no gasket................ it is the 1.8L 91 loyale................... Here is the description so you can identify the mating surface that I am talking about.... the cam cover bolts to it..... then it bolts to the head.......... So the surface that I am wondering about is the surface that bolts to the head................(cambox to head) No gasket............................... How can I seal this surface........... can I make my own gasket........ what can I do here..... Need some tips and tricks.............. I know on the last head job(also my first[on a subie]) I spooged some permatex on that surface............. this offered very little results........... So what do you subie enthusiasts do ????? Thanks , Micky
iluvdrt
if im not mistaken there is a little o-ring type gasket that should go around the cam holder piece . it would be on the side that bolts to the head.
Snowman
I've never heard of a gasket for this surface. ThreeBond 1215 is the recommended sealant for this, but that's almost impossible to find. I've been told by a bunch of mechanics to use Permatex anaerobic sealant, either the red kind or the grey kind. I used the red kind and it's worked great so far. Nug
You pretty much need it spotless to seal correctly, whichever method you use. For such an area, I like using 'Hondabond', a thick, RTV-like sealer from the manufacturer we all love to hate.

Nug
Yes, Permatex Ultra black, blue, gray, and copper are all excellent RTV's.
mickytrus
Hey, THanks! Appreciate the tips........ I'll clean the surface with some isopropyl alcohol........... Can anyone reccomend a better surface cleaner............??????????
WJM
I used this: http://www.permatex.com/products/prodidx.asp?automotive=yes&f_call=get_item&item_no=81878 The ultra copper. I cleaned the surface with a spray can of brake clean, it evaps fast, and leaves a dry clean surface.... Make sure you use a TINY TINY bit on the surface...very very thin...i think i went overboard, and went too thick...and the cams had play in them, before the lobes touched the cam followers, and they just rattled loosely...so make ONE really good THIN coat, and call it done. Let it set up for 12/24 hours, and then bolt it on. Make sure to use some of that to hold the oring in place too...
