Would the tranny out of my 93 Legacy L fit a 97 imp L?

Recommended Posts

if the final drive ratio is the same it should work. but i don't know the ratios off hand. there may be a difference in the speedo cables, the 93 has a cable driven speedo, i'm not sure about the 97. but either way i here it is an easy fix.

do some research at http://opposedforces.com/parts to find the ring and pinion / final drive ratios.

They should both be cable speedos. Even if they weren't, swapping the vss into the older transmission is easy.

If the final drive is different, swap the rear diff with it. No biggie there.

But is the wiring the same between obd1/obd2?***I***thought something with transmissions changed with the obd change.

with 90s auto transmissions it is really easy to tell. if the wiring connector fits, then the trans electrical will work. take a pic of your connector plug and the connector plug on the ''new'' trans. if they match it will work ELECTRICALLY. the final drive ratio still has to match.

the trans is not obd related, to the best of my knowledge.

I hate to post this, but im not an auto expert. I have no idea which category to look for these ratios. the 94 is a legacy L wagon AWD, the 97 impreza is an L sedan AWD. thats all i know. thanks.

off hand i don't think it is a match.

the 97 impreza AT , i know, is a 4.11 final drive ratio. but i think the 94 lego AT is a 3.9 ratio.

yep, i just double checked. the 94 lego AT is a 3.9 final drive ratio.

BUT if you have access to the car trans is coming from, you can use the matching, rear diff with the ''new'' trans and all will be good.

or you can locate a trans from ANY 2.2L legacy 95 - 98 . all the trans are the same. or any impreza 95 - 98. ( i think the 93 - 94 impreza were also the same.)

did you look on http://www.car-part.com ? you will have to search each year separately since the software does not know that the trans are the same. (put in your zip and sort your search by distance, shipping is expensive.)

i don't exactly understand the question, but if you are asking will the lego trans bolt into and mate with the impreza engine the answer is absolutely.

the bell housings and the torque converters for ej22s and ej18s 90 - 98 are all the same. so are the wiring connectors. you don't see anything different until you get to the ej25s or 1999.

your trans guy wasn't a subaru guy was he?

i dont think it will work i am pretty sure the imput shaft is bigger diameter om the legacy..i am doing trans work on mins right now i have a 93 imp L and 1.8 motor front wheek drive only..i have a trans out of a legacy same year and it has a biger input shaft...wanted to do a swap ..because my shaft seal is leaking...so now i had to just rebuild my trans i already had in the car

This seems slightly odd, as my old 90 4EAT was a 4.111.

And my 94 5sp is a 4.111 as well.

I'd be more apt to do some more searching to verify that it truly is a 3.9,

just in case.

This is a different case than yours :)

Autos have a different input shaft than the manuals.

The input shaft on an automatic slides into the torque converter, the

torque converter bolts to a flexplate, and the flexplate is then bolted to

the crank.

A manual's input shaft slides into a clutch plate which has friction

applied to it from a pressure plate.

The pressure plate that is bolted to a weighted flywheel, which, in turn,

is bolted to the crank.

Now, I believe you're referring to axle shafts, not input shafts.

The 93 FWD Impreza was an oddball, in that it has 23 spline axle shafts,

while the rest of the EJ transmissions had 25 spline axle shafts.

If you are referring to input shafts, I'm not sure there is a difference in

spline counts/size in any of the 90's EJ input shafts.

Yes, Josh does.

Thank you for the extra info for verification.

I just like to be completely sure about something, especially when its as

important/expensive as this is.
