johnceggleston
it is doubtful you caused any damage, i would just re-seat it. BUTthey can be a little tricky to seat if you don't KNOW how far to go. there is a great write up on it, search ''torqueconverter'' and read some of the oldest threads. how far did it come out? idosubaru
more importantly, will it still keep a seal...yes, it's done all the time, not a big deal at all.
ShawnW
Just keep an eye on it when you first start it up and first put it in gear a few times. If its going to leak its probably going to pour out. For the piece of mind just replace the seal its cheap insurance.

idosubaru
how bizarre. how far does it come out before it stops? did the trans work properly before being removed, what's the history of this trans? i guess one of the inner shafts is pulling out with it and somehow snagging...trying to picture how that would happen? ShawnW
Theres a shaft the length of the main trans case that slides into the inside of the torque converter. If that stays with the converter pull the converter out far enough (6-8") and the larger 2" piece that clips to the converter will be cleared and you can grab the smaller shaft and hold it from coming out. If this shaft comes out its no big deal, just push it back into the transmission, and pull the converter away with its piece thats clipped to it. I can upload a photo to clarify if needed. PM me. idosubaru
wow, 6". it's been awhile but that center most skinny shaft, i'm wondering if that is somehow engaged in the torque converter and coming out with it...i can't recall if that shaft slides easily out or can catch? when you install the torque converter to it's first "stopping point", it's still a few inches away...and it has a lot of side to side play, it'll "hang down" quite low if you don't hold it's weight. i wonder if yours does or doesn't do that? or if it's even out far enough to do that? i assume you see the two tubes connected by that circlip thing if it's coming out 6 inches? do you have another trans to compare too? i'm leaving for vacay in 8 hours so i probably can't reply though. definitely let us know how it turns out, this is quizzical. We ran it to this issue when trying to pull the motor out of my wrecked car and had limited space to work because the front end is smashed in. That rod stuck to the torque converter making it a PITA to get the engine out. If I remember right, the guy who was helping me described what ShawnW described when I asked him how he got it off. He ended up just taking the torque converter and everything attached to it with him, since I really didn't care about it, and it would have been more of a PITA to get it all off, than to not worry about it. mdjdc
I have had many of those trannies apart and I have Never had to replace the seal. If I were you, I would just put her back together and let her rip. You are creating more trouble than it is worth. Just my 2 cents
Petersubaru
this morning, pulled the thin shaft out and tubing..once it stopped, a little turn to the left and right and there it was in my hand..5 seconds on all..installed the new seal...with what took place today, it really is easy...more finesse and patience is needed here for this job and of course a somewhat strong bicept if you plan on doing this yourself...
