Where is the best deal on a timing belt kit?

Recommended Posts

I have no idea when the timing belts were changed on the 1990 Loyale Turbo station wagon that I recently bought, so I though I would just buy a complete kit with belts, tensioners, etc.

Can anyone recommend the place with the best price?

Also, I looked on a site (http://www.autopartswarehouse.com), and they have kits from 5 different manufacturers, ranging in price from $98 to $240, for the same components. Three of them say that their warranty is 12k miles/12month, while the Dayco kit says "Limited warranty" and the Gates kit says "Lifetime limited warranty.

I find it disturbing that some of them are only warranted for 12k miles when they are supposed to be changed at 60k miles.

Funny thing is that the cheapest kit and the most expensive kit both have a 12k mile warranty. I have no idea what "Limited warranty" and "Lifetime limited warranty" mean.

Can anyone provide some guidance before I make a purchase?

yup, this is the cheapest place. Also, I bought this kit and another, Dayco I think at $120, and compared parts. I am a little skeptical of buying the cheapest parts. I like to believe you get what you paid for. But comparing the kits, I found the bearings on the tensioners and idler were the same. The ITM kit actually came with some seals, but not all of them (stupid) which was kinda nice. Moving on to the belts, I really couldn't see any difference at all. I went ahead and used the more expensive kit and kept the cheaper one for a backup. If I had to recommend one though, I would have to say the cheap ITM kit from ebay.

Pick n pull junkyard..........

I bought an entire ej22T longblock and after i got home, I found it had a COMPLETELY brand new T belt, new tensioners, new pulleys etc.. entire engine cost me 150.

:banana::banana::banana:

after i sold the short block, for 500, i have a new t belt kit ;eftover and so it was paid for so no cost at all at this point. I made money on getting my tbelt kit.

ebay. can't click on links at the moment to see what's coming up but i've seen EA82 kits for $60-$80 for timing belt and pulleys.

i wouldn't concern myself with the warranty - they can't make them too long as they can't control how poorly a belt might be installed, treated, stored, or get contaminated with coolant/oil or otherwise not treated well, etc. 12,000 is a fairly standardized number in some ways, it's "one year" so to speak.
