Aftermarket? Cheaper, and there are install instructions :lol:

 

I picked up my keyless entry and remote start for $20 used off of ebay. Almost 2 years later it's still working like a champ! Only took about an hour and 3 relays to install the keyless entry part of the system. You do need some 12v experience though, just a thought...

Hmm I was looking at the service manual to see if it talked a bit over the keyless system.. might be helpful since it tells which color the connectors are. It appears that all the connections I will be looking for would be black instead of translucent.

Still checking.. but what I do know is it did have some type of aftermarket alarm.. funny thing is they mounted the alarm speaker where the stock one would go in like the same way in all..

 

But since I don't know much about the aftermarket systems don't they just plug into the factory harness? I keep getting busy with work so I really haven't had much time to look again but I can tell you is whatever they used tied into some wire harness and something else near the fuse panel along with a push button switch.

You mean does the key part link to the door unlock thing that you push to lock (can't think of the right term)

 

You mean the door lock switch on the inside of the door. When I push it feels like I am turning the cylinder.

Although when I push that one all other doors lock as well. So it is actuating. Really do not want to open the door and see there is one.

Oh on my car pushing that does not lock/unlock all other doors I have to press the button for that same when unlocking the door with the key.

My 97 Legacy L has the remote keyless entry system installed. It was a dealer add-on, and there are a bunch of wires tapped into various connectors under the dash. I would imagine that you would need the whole kit, security module, harness and two keyfobs, plus the service install instructions.

 

The car as shipped had some form of remote lock unlock system that the security system superseded.

I emailed Joe at cars 101 and he said this about the 97

 

" Hi, asked a mechanic and late 98s had a quick connect, otherwise no. And parts are no longer available. Go aftermarket? Joe"

 

I had people swear that I was not looking hard enough at other sites...

 

Ok so I can't use a Subaru one since it has no plugs.. And I can't tell what is going to what.. The thing with aftermarket systems is I don't need/want the alarm part.

When I pull them out at the yard, I'll pull the car side of the harness connectors as well so you can see where they plug in on the new car. Works well. Wish I had one now, as the car I'm working on had a system but someone pulled it and now the Drivers door does not lock and unlock with the door lock/unlock button. Power down to the plug in the forward kick panel but no ground. The ground must have been cut when the security system was put in.

 

I have to hunt one down.
