the3rsss
After doing a lot of reading on motor oil and how it is effected by temp etc. I have decided to go with a synthetic 0 w30 oil. Right now I am using a synthetic 5 w30 and a Bosch filter. I just can't seem to find this weight anywhere. Tried autozone, advance, and pep boys. They all carry 0 w20 not 30. Also, it seems stock subaru filters have a bypass setting of about 20 lbs, most supermarket are around 10. Do I really need such a high bypass? Was going to use a Mobil one filter. Any thoughts? Fairtax4me
The lower the bypass valve strength the less the oil actually gets filtered. Doubtful you'll find 0-30 in a local store. I have seen 0-40 in plenty of parts stores, and it will work just as well if not better than 0-30 depending on what kind of mileage is on your engine and what climate you live in. rverdoold
You really need the 0-W30. Ifso 0-W40 would be better option because it still can be used in summer as well (depending how hot the summer is). But full synthetic 5-W40 I used last year in -30 C scandinavian winter and now in +35 C italian summer in the mountains as well. No problems whatsoever. the3rsss
Do any quality aftermarket filters have the higher bypass rating? Or do i have to use the oem filter. BTW I have a 99 obw with 135k. Notice a little clatter when it first starts. Prob just a lil piston slap . I want a quality filter with an anti drainback valve. The cheap filters don't have it and the ones that do, leak off. Is the oem a good filter?
Fairtax4me
The best after market filter IMO is Wix. I have to order those and pay a higher price plus shipping to get them though. So I run Purolator almost exclusively on my soobs. As far as I know Subaru filters don't have anti-drainback valves at all. Subaru trusts the OEM filter for their vehicles because it meets their specifications for quality and filtration. If it's good enough for them it should be good enough for you. Plenty of Soobs out there running for 200k miles and beyond with Subaru oil filters on them.
1-3-2-4
Would 0-30W be something to use in a higher mileage engine? I just switched to synthetic 5-

Purolator filters are the closest to the OE for bypass valve pressures. Subaru blue filter does have an ADB valve. I used Purolator before, but went with OE filter last oil change, and the oil does seem cleaner some 4 months later. My guess, it could be the filter or could be because I ran Seafoam in crankcase for a few days before the oil change. Or could be because I used Valvoline synthetic blend this time around instead of Mobil1. And the car seems to be running a bit smoother when cold with Valvoline+Subaru filter. I'll definitely will be sticking with this combination for the next oil change.
