84 brat Headlight problems, only work with hibeams on..

My headlights only work with the hi beam switch on. If I turn on my headlights all lights work besides the headlights. 2 Fuses in the box are good, is there a relay somewhere that may have gone bad? The only thing I can think of is maybe the rain did something because it was raining hardcore here when it happened, but the car was off. Any ideas?

dumb question...did ya make sure the headlights themselves are okay?

 

I had a buddy who had (unknowingly) been drivin around with one lamp burned out. then the other one failed, so he pulled his hair out tryin to find the problem. I went to help him, and found out that both headlights were burned out. :slobber:

Yeah I'm going to have to pull a head light and see if im getting current when I turn then on, but the thing is I was driving, and I know they were working going home and I turned the car off for maybe ~15min, it was raining very hard and I drove through some deep puddles water got all over the hood so maybe water caused them to fail, but I'll just have to get new head lights.

Yeah I suspect its some stupid wiring problem... FML... this brat just keeps having problem after problem... I guess I'm just going to have to point my headlights more towards the ground and drive with hibeams on all the time. I guess it could be the switch itself?

Yeah. I've done a lot of wire work before, but always hate it... had a celica that had so many wiring issues it was ridiculous, but I basically redid the wiring harness with my on mods and inline fuses just to be done with the ordeal. I hope it maybe just the switch. Anyone know how to maybe wire the lobeams to the battery with an inline fuse and switch?

Before you get involved in lots of exotic wiring search, CHECK THE BULBS. It's not unusual for both to fail together. Secondly, get a voltmeter and check the alternator output at the battery when you rev the engine to about 2500 rpm. A faulty regulator in the alternator will allow the voltage to go above 14V, sometimes as high as 16 to 17 or more. This has been known to fry the low beams filaments in the headlights. Why not the high beams?.... Because you use them less.
