81EA81
While I was driving my 86 GL EA82 around town today I noticed a slight whistling noise. While I was at a steady speed I put my left foot on the clutch pedal just enough to take the 1/2in of play out with the clutch still engaged and the noise would stop, remove my foot and the noise would return. Any Ideas what could cause such a noise? Thanks

nipper
Isnt there one of these already? It is thge throw out bearing. It can be lived with for a while but eventually a clutch job is called for.
81EA81
IS it the throw out bearing? I thought a throwout bearing would make noise and chatter while the clutch is Disengaged.
nipper
It is rattling around on the fork. This is not an uncommon noise and like I said it can be ignored untill it gets worse or you do a clutch. Tis is a miata board but just an example that it happens. You can also find it mentioned on other makes. It is an annoyance. http://www.rx8club.com/archive/index.php/t-7404.html
81EA81
All right, I guess I can deal with that being the cause. The car dose have 288,8872 miles on it. So let me get this straight. I consider a clutch disengaged when there is no power going through the clutch to the tranny, pedal to the floor right?
92_rugby_subie
2:42-3:00 is my whining sound that I hear in the car, only outside the car, if I push the clutch in, that sound goes away.
81EA81
HMMM< sounds almost like a light belt sound, It seems a little louder on your car but its hard to say not hearing it in person. That was what I was thinking the noise was coming from on my car. I dont think it dose it at idle out of gear though. Ill check and let ya know. Just had a thought, It may be the gears in the tranny? I have a Geo Tracker That was run super low on gear oil. But that thing was LOUD and the gear oil in my soob "looks" fresh and is full.
92_rugby_subie
I cant get it to do it now... - the noise going away could be bad huh? It always did it for me when the clutch was out... I could hear it at low speeds in gear and at idle in neutral or when I would be on flat land I could lift the clutch up and as soon as it started to roll forward the noise started (in gear) and then at idle I could hear it... now it stopped... nipper
A cutch is engaged when you activate it, a clutch is disnengaged is when you deactivate it. A clutch's puprose is to disconnect power, as opposed to connect power, since if no one fiddles with it power is transmitted as it's natural state Noises like this come and go with weather and how loud the stereo was turned up. How many miles on the clutch?

poolskaterpt
That noise is the throwout/clutch release bearing. I wouldn't drive on a squeaky one for too long as they can seize when they get hot (city driving) and the race can possibly shatterzzzand then you cannot engage the clutch (pull it away from flywheel) and it can cost you a towing fee equal to the cost of replacement clutch. kayakertom
My recent suspected clutch noise turned out to be coming from the power steering pump - the noise change when the clutch was pushed in was from the rpm change the power steering pump experienced. Deener
Hey hey...I recently had the exact same problem just after I replaced my clutch in the 93 Loyale. I must have adjusted the clutch up and down twenty times before I realized that the sound was actually coming from the hill holder cable - the clip that snugs the HH cable to the metal bracket (firewall side I believe) was missing and the sound was extinguished the moment the clip was back in place. May not be your issue - but its something worth checking out.
