Radio memory wiring...

So since my EJ swap, the memory of the radio is non existent, now i cant see how the swap would cause this. SO.. how is the constant power wired?

but where does the constant power come thru the wiring harness? i am thinking i just have a connector loose or something but i was doin a ninja flip looking up under the steering column and couldnt find anything, there were a few connectors for stuff like cruise etc that my car doesnt have etc.

 

i got the memory to work this way though..

only thing is i dont know what the orange wire or the green wire are really for? the green wire has 12v+ constant with the key off. the orange, i assumed was probably for an accessory (tape deck?) yet this retained the memory. just dont want to find a dead battery in the AM.

If in doubt, just run a new wire from the fuse box. Or you could tap into the main wire running from the battery in the steering column going to the ignition. You would just have to fuse it if you came off of that wire.

 

But who cares what the wire was originally intended for? If it has 12v+ with the key off, then use it. Nothing wrong with that. If you are really concerned about it, the only thing that would could be bad is overload the circuit, and blowing fuses. But I doubt that your radio will do that. But there is really only one way to find out, try it!

 

The only thing the radio needs for it to turn on and keep it's settings is 12+ constant, 12+ off the ignition, and ground. Everything else you can make happen. Right now, that's all my radio has is those three wires, and 2 pairs of RCA cables :-) Well, the power antenna wire too, but that doesn't really count :-) But it all works great!

 

I can scan the diagram if you need it as well and want to use the original wire. I got it kicking around somewhere...

yeah i was gonna tap into the power wire to the ignition originally. but then i found that green one. my only concern was that i was powering something else that didnt need to be powered, which, really is only an issue 3-4 months outta the year when its cold as ************ here in WI.

 

just thinking thought, if that orange wire is a power output.. couldnt that be problematic if im sendin 12v from the battery to it when the radio is on, and its running smack into 12v from the green wire? i suppose a diode could be a solution to that.

 

i think i'll make a connector to connect the green wire to the constant.

Are you using the stock radio still? If so, I don't know what that orange wire is for. But I don't see the radio sending out any 12v+ signal, except for the power antenna or for an amp turn on. Other than that, it's not 12v+ that the radio sends out. But you are correct, that it could cause problems if you are sending 12v+ down a wire that is sending the 12v+ to it as well.

 

Again, I think I have a diagram for the stock radio, so that might help identify the wires on the back of the radio, if you are using the stock radio that is...

 

did you do the tape deck trick thing to get the rca cables working?

 

I am using a kenwood radio, so not an issue for me. I also have a line in to rca converter I can use so I can use a stock radio with a bunch of amps. This device will also boost the line in signal so that I get good voltage down the RCA's. It's called the Phoenix Gold SLD44, in case you care :) Works great for using the stock deck with a big custom install.

im sorry, yeah, its the stock AM/FM radio with a harmon kardon Drive+play ipod connector (ipod in glove box, display mounted where clock was, controller mounted near steering wheel)

 

if i recall i thought the orange wire would be for the tape deck power, maybe not, i dunno.

 

anyways... i've had it hooked up like this and it hasnt caused any battery drainage. so im thinking that i should be good to leave it as it is without issue.

I think you may have blown the fuse for the memory circuit. If you haven't verified that all the fuses under the hood are ok by using a test light probe then I suggest you do that.

 

As far as control for an external amp or extendable antenna 12 volts is used to do that.

do you know what fuse that is off hand? im pretty sure i check all the fuses in the fusebox under the dash. under the hood are you talkin about a fusible link?

No, he's talking about the fuse box under the hood, if the loyales have them. I know in my legacy, my radio fuse is under the hood. I found out the hard way when I blew my radio memory fuse :-\ So there might be a fuse box under the hood that would be worth checking out. I can't honestly remember if/where it is on the loyale, it's been to long since I was under the hood of one...

No fusible box under the Hood in Loyales, Just Fusible Links... The Fusible Box is in the Driver's Side, under the Dash.

Thanks for the heads up about the Loyale model guys. I wasn't thinking about that when I posted earlier.

 

My info for an '88 model shows there is a green wire used for the memory, just like it is shown in the picture. Verify that 12 volts is getting to orange wire side of the connection . If that is good then it appears the memory may be bad inside the radio or a wire connection inside it has broken somewhere.
