garylov
97 legacy with bad torque bind, flashing oil temp lite.check engine lite. am pulling 2 codes. i dont have with me exactly what they are. i think 740 and743(?) both had to do with electric to trans. tried fuse in fwd socket- nothing. no fwd lite , no diff in tb. checked fuse sockets. one is a ground the other had 7.9 volts. where should i start? can i run a wire from the battery to somewhere to check solenoid or might i fry something? i bought the car in this condition. it only has 107000 miles. is in otherwise great condition. any thoughts on what i should look at 1st ,2nd,and 3rd would greatly appreciated. gary l. idosubaru
if you have the codes you should post exactly what they are, we should probably start there before proceeding with *i think*. you can google any engine or trans code to find what it is. if the duty solenoid fails then the FWD fuse won't work. usually it's the Duty C solenoid. you could check to make sure the Duty C circuit is powered/has continuity, when it has no power it gives you torque bind as a default position so to speak. it needs power to manage the line pressure...so if the wire is cut or not powered/has continuity it'll give you torque bind. man, clear as mud? you can remove the rear half of the driveshaft to at least make the car driveable for now as FWD if it's that hosed that it's not even working. normally it's the duty solenoid, but given you got it this way...? garylov
i only have 7.9 volts to the fwd fuse holder so i am assuming that even if the "c" was good it wouldn't work.am i looking at a bad wire or what? how can i check? thanks
nipper
We need the exact tranny code and engine codes. Subaru switches all go to ground. Essentially the FWD fuse is a switch, that closes a circuit that signals the TCU to hold the solenoid open. Your solenoid is not opening, and like said above, is fried. before you fix it, check your tranny fluid. If it is clean your clutches may be ok, if it is burnt the (awd) clutches may be damaged. ocei77
meanwhile, change the tranny fluid. O.
garylov
the codes i pulled are-p0740 "torque converter clutch solenoid circuit/open" and-p0743 "torque converter clutch solenoid circuit electrical" as read off the scanner. i have read every post i have been able to find concerning tb. nipper you have an awful lot! everybody- all very helpful. i have only read one about possible voltage drop at fwd fuse holder, but i have not been able to find it again. had to do with maybe a pinched wire in transmission. i realize i am going to have to change C solenoid even if just because it is a good idea, sorta like timing belts. i just would like to know what im doing and why im doing it, before i do it. does the voltage to the fwd fuse holder come directly from the solenoid? solenoid being jambed up or just fried causing the voltage drop? trans fluid looks like it was just changed. with the car came a new trans pan gasket in with the spare like someone was going to go in there. guess ill do it just to check screen and wire. from pics ive seen posted looks like solenoid wire runs thru trans. correct? what does the speed sensor do? any tips or sage advice will be appreciated. thanks
johnceggleston
any damage to the trans oil pan? a dented pan can cause troubles like this. if yes, it could be a cut or pinched wire. if no, you need a new solenoid in the trans.
garylov
pan looks good. cant really tell if it has been taken off recently or not.
garylov
okay, i changed the c solenoid and did the groove grinding thing and it seems to have cured the torque bind issue. but i still have at start up the flashing atf lite and check engine lite stays on. am also still pulling code p0743 "torque converter clutch solenoid circuit/electrical" also i am still only reading 7.9 volts at the fwd fuse terminal . shouldnt this be 12 volts? does anybody know?could some body check theirs just to see? and where is the torque converter clutch solenoid and what does it do? will it hurt to drive it like this. anybody? thanks!! gary l.
