man on the moon
I just did a 5sp/dr swap. The new shifter is brown, my car interior is blue. I am thinking of putting just the push button shifter handle back on so it looks as close to oem as possible, and toying around with things I can connect to the button now that I don't need it anymore. So far I have: Driving lights Spotlight/offroad lights Noise maker Keyless starter button Interior light (stock or cargo light) Rear hatch opener (would require a motor in the latch) Any other ideas, or anyone done it? If it turns out the shifter won't fit right, the wiring is still in place and it would be nothing to wire up a small switch.

MilesFox
It's a ganged switch, with one switch on and the other switch off in any configuration. if you had a diff lock, it would operate that with the same solenoids. it would work for a pair of light sets where one light would turn off while the other set is on, say, between fog lights and flood lights. you would probably have to hybrid the shifter, using the pushbutton's lever with the dual ranges mounting to be a good fit. tractor pole
use it for a starter kill, so you have to press it in to start with the key and when you release it cuts the starter circuit out. a little added security. wire it up through a relay of course. man on the moon
Dude, ejection seat! FTW Maybe I'll sand off the 4wd emblem and put one on that says something along that line. Don't mind playing with the fit a bit. I noticed the top portion of the handle is held on by a pin, so I'm guessing the assembly comes apart with a little persuasion and I can figure something out to get it working. I'll cut a slit in the skirt for the 4wd handle. I'm debating whether to cut a slot in the original metal floor piece, too, but im going to wait and see whether the skirt leaves a gap or not. Miles: are you saying it IS a switch that is always on, or it can be wired that way?

Loyale 2.7 Turbo
...Noise maker .... man on the moon
@miles: nm, just read your post again, it makes sense now. Loyale 2.7: that is what I had in mind. That or a clanking sound so no I've wants to steal it. Or a really loud siren or horn. Or a dog whistle for animals. I can get a differential switch from an xt and mount it on my console if I decide I want two toys.
drugh
When I put the D/R tranny in my loyale, the old 5speed push button shifter handle became the tap handle for the garage kegerator. I have not seen a better tap handle anywhere else. I has worked flawlessly like that for about 4 years now.
man on the moon
Keg handle was on my mind (minus not having a keg), or a beat stick, then I thought I might try it in the car. A good idea if it doesn't work out, though!
MilesFox
the shift knob is removed by driving out some roll pins. you can take up the center console cover plate to access the wire. I once had a pushbutton wagon, which i swapped an rx trans into, and use the regular shift knob. I left the orignal knob on the floor under the seat, still plugged in, to operate the diff lock, since it is the same mechanism between a diff lock trans and a pushbutton 4wd trans. as far as how the switch works, think of 2 switches side by side, one is off, one is on, pointing the same way, when you flip it the other way, the one that was on is now off, and the one that was off is now on. it is what would be called a double post double throw switch , or dp/dt in electrical terms
man on the moon
That makes sense. After I reread your earlier description I was picturing it as sort of a switcher in a train track, where it can turn on one of two circuits, but not both at the same time. For example, I could wire two sets of lights--one on my bumper, and one on a the roof. I could have one or the other on depending on the switch position.
